God's Open Door Policy!

I know your works. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.”  (Revelations 3:8)

If you’ve ever driven Route 51 in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, chances are you’ve noticed the charming little white church looking more like it should be in the countryside than on a busy city highway. The church is even more captivating at Christmas time when the picket fence in front is adorned with strings of colored lights. This year, those lights will welcome Living Stones neighbors on Christmas day, when we celebrate the birth of our Savior with them at our regularly scheduled Sunday meal.

Fairhaven United Methodist Church, located in the Overbrook section of the city, is Living Stones' newest location. We served our first meal there on October 30. Never knowing how many will come, especially the first time we serve at a new location, we planned for 40. God sent nearly 80! While we welcomed both new and familiar faces and scrambled to set up more tables, we wondered how we could possibly feed all those people.

As we put the last spoonful of food into a to-go container for a late arrival, we marveled at how we were able to feed so many people with seemingly far too little food. No one left hungry, and we enjoyed talking about the story of Jesus and the loaves and fishes. It had been an exhausting but exhilarating day, and we thanked God for opening the doors of this tiny church with a big heart and large, bright social room so that we could feed and care for more of His children in need.

We waited for what seemed a long time for God to show us where we were to serve next. As always, His timing was perfect. Just when the doors were closed at St. Catherine’s, they were opened at Fairhaven. Certain that God wants us to continue to grow, we prayerfully await His leading as to what that means and where we are to go.

As we anticipate God’s direction, we are reminded during this season of Advent that waiting in eager anticipation of a good thing can be a valuable time of reflection and preparation. So, whether waiting for God’s next call for Living Stones or for Christ’s coming on Christmas, we do so prayerfully and busily, with the hope, peace, joy, and love that are a part of Advent. We invite you to do the same and wish each of you

a blessed and glorious Christmas!

Coffee and Conversations with Lisa Sylvester

Lisa Sylvester, well-known WPXI news anchor, is also a Living Stones volunteer. She and her daughter faithfully serve with us every month. She has a heart for who we are and what we do. Just before Thanksgiving, she chose to feature us in a Coffee and Conversations spot she was producing on gratitude. Click here to enjoy watching Lisa and some of our dedicated volunteers.

GROW Living Stones fosters the cultivation of relationships with neighbors who join us for meals at Living Stones tables. As relationships develop and deepen, GROW Living Stones volunteers come alongside those individuals and families to assist them in navigating the challenges in their lives and encourage them to find hope in Christ as they learn to trust Him.
