Greetings from C. Darby Ulery, founder of "Let's Go! Fairhope," events-related newsletter, calendar and website resource for Fairhope, Alabama.
Thank you to everyone who replied to last week's message! It means a lot to have your words of support, suggestions, resources and encouragement.
It's an honor to create a diverse community events-related newsletter that serves as a place for information for residents regardless of political, religious, or cultural preferences.
A neighbor asked a question last week: "Do you allow political ads?" That topic hadn't come up yet, so it was a good issue to consider. In the end, I said I didn't see why not as long the ad is positive or neutral and doesn't disparage an opponent. There are many different types of activities and events going on, and whomever wants to help support community events-related news is welcome here.
Do you agree or disagree with this perspective?
I hope you'll reply with your thoughts!

Our long-time readers have heard this story before: In an unfortunate occurrence a couple years ago, Let's Go! Fairhope was blocked from our own Events-In-Fairhope-Alabama Facebook group. So many people reported Let's Go! Fairhope for sharing an event to inform the community, that it was weeks before anything at all could be posted or shared. More recently, in a similar situation, a shared post in a larger Fairhope Facebook group was deleted by moderators because many users misunderstood the difference between information and endorsement.
Striving to be a fair and balanced community news resource, this has bothered me.
It lead me to wonder:
"Has the world of social media changed general perception regarding what is information and what is endorsement?"
Apparently we can ask AI anything nowadays, so I inquired:
| | |
I had no idea there would be such a definitive answer.
I realize I've been quite isolated for the past five years, as last week's readers learned. Perhaps I have an overly optimistic nature, I'm naive at times... I'm living under a rock in Fairhope. Whatever the reason, I didn't know I had taken on such an uphill battle.
This lead me to ask more questions:
"What does it mean to have a newsletter with a 67% open-rate?"
| | |
I also realize we are the choir here! Some of our readers report they do not use social media at all, and I have to doubt userrs want Meta to represent our entire communication source.
Just to double-check the latest status of other information outlets, I asked AI:
| | |
For anyone skimming, this is not a political or social opinion regarding Mr. Zuckerberg. My thinking is simple: I don't think he lives in Fairhope, Alabama.
Is it possible to have a community news resource that isn't owned or controlled by an algorithm set up to show us news and what it thinks we already want to see? Is that naive? Is there at least a fair hope of success?
I entered the question and held my breath as the blue lines wiggled across the screen, awaiting the fate of Let's Go! Fairhope...
What was it going to say?? It could go either way.
| | Apparently it's possible, but how...? | | And what are we up against? | | |
Each time you open the newsletter, share it, reply, send in information, or visit the website, YOU are building this effort. When you show support financially, you are demonstrating this project is worthwhile and you'd like it to continue.
Please sponsor $25-55 of news for our community in the next month! We'd love to give you and/or your business or organization a big thank you shout here in the newsletter.
If you prefer to recognize a friend, family member, or even the family dog, we can do that, too.
| | Did you see the A.I. related article last week regarding Hatch Fairhope and the upcoming Hatch-a-thon? In case you missed it or want to review it again, here's a link along with the question: "Do we even need community newsletters like Let's Go! Fairhope anymore?" I hope you'll respond with your ideas and honest thoughts. | | |
