Rising Star Award: Courtney Brunson

Champions of Housing’s Rising Star Award recipient Courtney Brunson has partnered with Metro Housing Boston at each stage in her career so far. She first learned about the organization while working for U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren’s office in 2017. As a member of the senator’s economic policy team, Courtney was researching housing resources for low-income families and people of color when she came across Metro Housing. After visiting the organization shortly after, Courtney was inspired by Metro Housing’s cause. “I was in awe of the level of care, expertise, and collaboration Metro Housing had with participants to make sure they had all the tools they needed to lead healthy lives,” she says.

Courtney remained connected to Metro Housing while studying at Harvard Law School and in her current role as the Director of the Wealth Gap Partnership at the Boston Foundation, an organization that brings together leadership from nonprofits, government, businesses, along with analysts and researchers, to expand homeownership for people of color to close the racial wealth gap in Greater Boston. “Metro Housing is serving as a thought leader in helping us look forward and narrow the racial wealth gap,” she says.

Upon learning she was the recipient of the Rising Star Award for Metro Housing’s Champions of Housing event; Courtney was grateful and humbled. “I was blown away to know an organization to have an organization I’ve been working with to recognize me and my work,” she says. “I hope to use this recognition to propel me forward and continue the work we’re doing.”

Join us for a virtual discussion about the Section-8 Program and exploring strategies to address the housing crisis in our region and across the state. You will hear insights from tenants, housing experts, civic leaders, and key stakeholders from across Massachusetts.

The discussion aims to foster meaningful dialogue on the critical role of the Section-8 Program in our community’s housing landscape and how we can collectively address challenges moving forward.

Metro Housing Boston is excited to announce the organization will be receiving a $575,000 grant from the Mass General Brigham and Women’s Community Advisory Committee for eviction prevention and rental assistance. This grant will go toward the Tenant Stabilization Fund (TSF) which provides participants with emergency cash assistance to preserve their tenancies or to enter new tenancies rather than the emergency shelter system.

In 2023, Metro Housing case managers responded to over 50,000 participant inquiries including email, phone, and walk in support services. The TSF Program helps Greater Boston households maintain stable housing when facing eviction, loss of utilities, and other housing emergencies.
