Just like that, May is upon us. Spring ephemerals are popping up on the forest floor and migrating birds are returning north, preferring the warmer temperatures that are finally here to stay. For ISN, May means transitioning into treatment season, starting with garlic mustard. If you have been outside exploring in recent weeks you may have noticed that garlic mustard is growing quickly. Join us at one (or two!) of our spring workbees to help manage this invasive throughout northwest Michigan! Check out our events section below or on our website to learn more and to register!

We are also excited to introduce two new members of the ISN team! Fields Ratliff, Habitat Management Specialist, and Miriam Owsley, Outreach Assistant, joined us just a couple of weeks ago but are already invaluable to our efforts. Read on below or hop on over to our website to read more about their diverse backgrounds and the role they will be playing within the network.

As always, we encourage you to continue reporting any invasive species you find to the  Midwest Invasive Species Information Network (MISIN).

Yours in Conservation,

New Faces at ISN!

Fields Ratliff
Habitat Management Specialist

Fields joins ISN in the newly created position of Habitat Management Specialist. With recent grant funding calling for additional treatment throughout our four county service area, there was a need for somebody to tackle those projects head on! Fields will be wearing several hats within the network but coordinating treatment efforts, with a focus on Benzie and Manistee counties, is a priority. Additionally, his efforts will be directed toward managing the seasonal crew, contacting stakeholders, and assisting with the collection and reporting of critical invasive species data.

With a diverse background in natural resources management throughout the region, Fields will be a great asset to the ISN team. Read his bio on our website!

Miriam Owsley
Outreach Assistant

Starting as a part-time employee, Miriam is already essential to the expansion of ISN's outreach efforts! A major part of the work we do is reaching out to potential new partners and stakeholders. Miriam will be focusing on making those connections throughout the region, contacting folks from Lake Associations to City Managers (and everywhere in between). Apart from direct outreach, she will also be involved with growing Go Beyond Beauty, coordinating volunteer events, and developing new materials.

Read more about Miriam and her connection to this region on our website! ISN is excited to have her on board.
