Historical Tidbit: The Dark Day

a508ba1f-f023-4606-8bc4-0ff8b4724121 image

"May 19, 1780 was a remarkable dark day, which extended over the eastern states. It commenced in Halifax early in the morning and continued till the morning of the 20th. The atmosphere here appeared to be filled with a dense smoke but there was no known cause which could produce such an effect. The grass and leaves appeared to be drenched in a gloomy green.

“The darkest time of the day was between eleven and two o'clock. Many families found it necessary to light a candle when they ate their dinner, (noon time meal). In the night, it is said 'there was not a ray of light even of the feeblest class to distinguish an object though ever so near.' The real cause of this darkness has nestled in conjecture to the present day."

Back in 1780, there was no way to find an explanation as to what was happening because there were no meteorologists. Today scientists and researchers believe that distant wildfires caused the darkness due to high amounts of ash particles in the atmosphere.

Respectfully Submitted,

Sue Basile

Area 58 & Halifax Town News Are Looking for Student Volunteers

The Halifax Town News will be working with Area 58, the local news station, to create a recorded version of Halifax's monthly newsletter. Starting this month, students will have the opportunity to become one of the reporters. Every month a group of up to 10 students will report on different events, updates, and announcements regarding the happenings of the town. Each student will get their own segment during their respective month.

The finished recording will be broadcasted to all the residents of Halifax as an engaging way to inform everyone of the community’s current events. If you (or your child) are in grades 4-12 and want to get involved, please email eva.chapman@halifax-ma.org. Include your full name, grade, and which month you would be willing to help out. You can sign up for as many months as you want. We are hoping to eventually have a regular rotation of student reporters. Town of Halifax August Newsletter

Climate Can Do:  Overconsumption and Sustainable Practices

What Is Overconsumption?

Overconsumption is the excessive consumption or use of something. Without change we could eventually run out, or create more than we can dispose of.

How Can We Help?

Live sustainably, make lifestyle choices that help you and the planet. Small changes make a big impact:

*Walk, bike or take public transportation whenever possible!

*Consider alternatives to single use items:

  •  A reusable shopping bag.
  • Skip the plastic bottles; all sorts of reusable bottles can be found in metal, glass and recycled plastic
  • Replace Saran Wrap with wraps made from beeswax, cotton, and tree oil that keep food fresher and can be reused repeatedly.
  • Use reusable towels instead of paper towels.

*Consider eating 2 or 3 meatless dinners / week:

Don’t throw away leftovers; eating leftovers will help you avoid food waste and save you money. Freeze pre-made meals for handy eating later.

*Rather than replacing, repair.

Do not automatically discard broken items when they break. Instead, try repairing it. Using this method can save you money and reduce landfill waste. Repair shops and Youtube Videos are readily available to help you fix things.

*Join Buy Nothing.

With Buy Nothing, you can get rid of unwanted things around your house and get things you need for free. Their motto “Buy Nothing. Share Everything,” a sustainable living app.

*Shop local.

By shopping locally, you reduce the impact of transportation on the environment and support your local economy.

Human beings are hard-wired for curiosity.

“Once we believe in ourselves, we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight, or any experience that reveals the human spirit.”

~ E. E. Cummings

"As long as you’re interested in people and things, that curiosity propels you forward.”

~ Joanna Coles

“Listen with curiosity. Speak with honesty. Act with integrity. The greatest problem with communication is we don’t listen to understand. We listen to reply. When we listen with curiosity, we don’t listen with the intent to reply. We listen for what’s behind the words.”

~ Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart

“Study hard what interests you the most in the most undisciplined, irreverent and original manner possible.”

~ Richard Feynmann
