HBC Striar Conservancy Hike

HBC Holds Striar Conservancy Talk & Walk!

On September 11th, the Halifax Beautification Committee organized a community "talk" and presentation with Howard Randall, board member and past president of Wildlands Trust. A great deal of history, maps, and information was shared about the Striary Conservancy properties, as well as discussion of how to develop more usage for these areas.

Following the talk, on September 14th, the HBC planned an approximate 2 1/4 mile walk beginning at the Striar Conservancy off of Route 105. In addition to the participating attendees, Wildlands Trust personnel came along on the walk to guide the group and answer any questions. With beautiful weather, and these knowledgeable guides on hand, the participants were able to walk and explore safely.

Thank you to the HBC for planning the Talk & Walk, thank you to Wildlands Trust for assisting and participating in the hike, and thank you to all who came out to learn more about Striar Conservancy! Additionally, for those who missed the HBC's Talk with Howard Randall, it is recorded and posted to Area58 Channels.

Historical Tidbit: Estes Garage

cb510d34-2d50-4e81-8fec-0e1b4a451ee0 image

This picture of the garage above shows two doors but it originally had only one which was the one on the left. It had printed on it in large letters FREE AIR which was a very important item in as much as there was no other place for miles around where a person could inflate a tire.

On a deed dated the 7th day of May 1925 between the Atlantic Refining Company, a corporation of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and George W. Estes of Halifax, an agreement was drawn up so that the Atlantic Refining Company could install equipment for the retailing of gasoline and motor oil to the general public. Mr. Estes owned the property to the west of where the garage sat so he had it moved to the new location and attached a gas station to the business. Halifax Glass now sits on this property.

Before coming to Halifax to start his new business Mr. Estes was associated with the bus service in Brockton. My grandfather, Guy Baker, once stated that George Estes was the best trouble-shooter auto repairman he ever saw.

CPA Presentation at the Halifax TRIAD Meeting

At the monthly TRIAD meeting on Tuesday September 10, the Halifax's Opportunity to Preserve and Enhance (HOPE) Committee gave an informational presentation on the November ballot question (#6) to adopt the Community Preservation Act (CPA). The CPA allows cities and towns in Massachusetts to create a local fund specifically for open space acquisition, historic preservation, community housing and outdoor recreation projects. Cities and towns that adopt the CPA also receive funds from the State's Community Preservation Trust Fund each year for these same purposes. Currently 196 cities and towns in Massachusetts have adopted the Community Preservation Act. The presentation highlighted several impressive projects completed by area towns.

Based on currently available figures, with a 1.5% surcharge and the exemptions for the first $100,000 of residential and commercial property value, in addition to the low/moderate income exemption, Halifax would generate approximately $238,000 per year. This figure does not include the annual disbursement Halifax would receive from the state's CPA Trust Fund, which would be in addition to the local CPA revenue raised. The annual cost to the average Halifax homeowner would be approximately $84 annually payable in two installments of $42 each.

Compassion

"If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion." ~ Dalai Lama

"Our uniqueness, our individuality, and our life experience molds us into fascinating beings. I hope we can embrace that. I pray we may all challenge ourselves to delve into the deepest resources of our hearts to cultivate an atmosphere of understanding, acceptance, tolerance, and compassion. We are all in this life together."

~ Linda Thompson

"In my view, the best of humanity is in our exercise of empathy and compassion. It's when we challenge ourselves to walk in the shoes of someone whose pain or plight might seem so different than yours that it's almost incomprehensible." ~Sarah McBride

"In Asian languages, the word for 'mind' and the word for 'heart' are same. So if you're not hearing mindfulness in some deep way as heartfulness, you're not really understanding it. Compassion and kindness towards oneself are intrinsically woven into it. You could think of mindfulness as wise and affectionate attention."
