A Word from the Pastor

October 4, 2024

Our Scripture readings at Mass this weekend highlight the importance of Christian marriage. The Catholic Church teaches that marriage is a sacred and profound sacrament, instituted by Christ, which signifies the union between Christ and the Church. This sacrament is not merely a social contract or ritual; it is a divine gift that sanctifies and saves the spouses, allowing them to experience a love that mirrors the unconditional love of Christ for His Church.

Marriage is understood as a covenant between a man and a woman, characterized by mutual love and fidelity. It is a vocation that calls couples to a deeper communion of life and love, aimed at the good of the spouses and the upbringing of children. The grace of the sacrament empowers spouses to love each other as Christ loves the Church, fostering an indissoluble bond that reflects divine love.

The Church emphasizes that marriage is a lifelong commitment, a reality that endures as long as both partners are alive. This bond cannot be dissolved by any human authority, highlighting its sacred nature.

Furthermore, the family, often referred to as the "domestic Church," is seen as a microcosm of the universal Church, where the values of faith and love are nurtured.

In the context of mixed marriages (different religions), the Church encourages harmony in faith between spouses, recognizing that differences in belief can challenge the unity of the marriage. Spouses need to be attentive to the differences and complementarity of their beliefs.

The sacrament of marriage is also viewed as a mission, where couples are called to be witnesses of God's love and grace in the world. That is one of the meanings of marriage as a sacrament – being a sign of God’s love in the world.

Overall, the Church's teaching on marriage underscores its significance as a path to holiness, a source of grace, and a vital component of the Christian life.

On Saturday, October 19, the "Happily Ever After" marriage enrichment will present a day for married couples. It will be led by couples from the Worldwide Marriage Encounter and will be held in our parish center, from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. More information is contained elsewhere in the bulletin or newsletter. I encourage you to participate and grow in God’s love as a couple.

Ruah Adonai Breath of God Bible Study

Join now for 2024-2025 as we study in two parts. Now Is the Time of Mercy! Divine Mercy In the Second Greatest Story Ever Told is a dramatic 10-session journey featuring popular speaker Fr. Michael Gaitley, MIC., …who weaves a tapestry of wonder and beauty from the threads of the dramatic history of Poland, the transformative message of St. Faustina Kowalska.”

The second half of the year, we will study the Gospel of Luke, The Story of Salvation Fulfilled by Ascension Press. Saint Luke was a physician, prolific writer and traveling companion of Saint Paul. The Gospel of Luke includes unique parables like the Good Samaritan, the rich man in Lazarus, and the prodigal son. This coming liturgical year is the year of Luke, so this will reinforce what we hear at Holy Mass.

Beginning Thursday, October 10 at 8:30 am, participants will meet every week to view an engaging video presentation, followed by a lively group discussion and fellowship. Ruah Adonai is open to men and women.

Gospel Reading

Mark 10:2-16

Jesus teaches against divorce and welcomes the children.

Background on the Gospel Reading

Today we continue to read from the Gospel according to Mark. For the past three Sundays, we have been hearing Mark’s reports of conversations between Jesus and his disciples. Recall that in Mark’s Gospel, Jesus uses these private moments to teach his disciples in greater detail about the Kingdom of God. Beginning with today’s Gospel, Jesus returns to Judea, Jewish territory, and resumes his public ministry. The first verse of chapter 10 of Mark’s Gospel tells us that crowds gathered around Jesus, and he taught them, as was his custom. Immediately, the Pharisees approach Jesus to test him.

The Pharisees question Jesus about the lawfulness of divorce. Under specific conditions, divorce was an accepted practice among the Jewish people during the time of Jesus. It was regulated by the Law of Moses, as found in Deuteronomy 24:1-5. This law only permits that a husband may divorce his wife if he finds her to be indecent. This is the justification that the Pharisees reference when Jesus inquires about the commandment of Moses. In reply, Jesus quotes from the Book of Genesis and counters that God’s original intention was that men and women would become one flesh in marriage. Jesus describes the teaching of Moses as a concession made to God's original intention because of human stubbornness.

In private, Jesus’ disciples question him further about this teaching on divorce. It is to his disciples that Jesus lays out the implications of his teaching by explaining that remarriage after divorce is adultery. Jesus’ teaching was more restrictive than the teaching of the Pharisees, which permitted remarriage. Jesus further distinguished his teaching from the cultural norms of his time by applying his words equally to men and women. Jewish culture permitted only that a husband may divorce his wife. Wives were not permitted to divorce their husband for any reason, including adultery.

At first glance, the final part of today’s Gospel seems unconnected to the previous teaching about divorce. When read together, however, these passages present a strong picture of Jesus’ emphasis on the importance of family. God intended for women and men to be joined together in marriage. Among the purposes of marriage is the raising of children. By welcoming children and fostering their relationship with God, parents and families bear witness to the Kingdom of God.

At the end of today’s Gospel, the people were bringing their children to Jesus, and again Jesus’ disciples show that they just don’t get it. Recall that in the Gospel for each of the past two Sundays, Jesus has taught his disciples the value and importance of these “little ones” in the Kingdom of God. Yet in today’s Gospel, the disciples try to prevent people from bringing their children to Jesus. Jesus reprimands his disciples and welcomes these children. Again, Jesus offers these children as an example of the kind of complete trust and dependence upon God that ought to be the attitude of all believers.

Psalm 128

This Sunday’s responsorial psalm is frequently used for Catholic weddings. Here is a simple chant version of Psalm 128.

Miramos cómo sufren a no sentirse amados y necesitados.
