HINT: Make up a hat knitting kit
Keep the supplies for knitting hats in a gallon zip lock bag.
Two 16" circulars (one for the ribbing and a larger size for the hat), DPNs to finish the decreases at the top, the pattern, and a crochet hook to pick up lost stitches. You could add a nail clippers for cutting yarn and a Chibi large eye darning needle and you'd be all set to knit.
[See that bundle of plastic sacks? That's what I stuff inside the wet hat as I block it. I put a fan nearby and turn the hat occasionally. It dries fast using the stuffing method.]
Oh yes! Add in one skein of worsted weight yarn. We have used the yarns below with excellent results.
Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride Worsted
Which yarn to use?
Simplinatural (there's some silk in the yarn) has a soft, cushy elegant feel. Lamb's Pride Worsted knits up firmly and develops a sheen from the mohair blended into the wool.
The accordion pattern stretches out when you use either yarn as the hat is used.
