July 2022

Are you ready to help Keep Manatee Beautiful? Register if you're able to help meet the challenge. Also, join us in welcoming our newest members, who graduated from the June Basic Training course June 25.
From the top
As we near July 4th, many of us look forward to celebrating Independence Day with a barbeque and a fireworks show. While fireworks can be fun, they can be dangerous. Last year, nine people died, and an estimated 11,500 people were treated in the ER for incidents involving fireworks. Please celebrate safely.
We completed a successful CERT Basic Training class at EMFR Station 1 last Saturday. Our CERT team members demonstrated the depth of skills we have added to our organization. Three of our regular instructors were unavailable for that class; six members stepped in to fill the gaps marvelously. In 2018, we had nobody available locally who was FEMA “Train-the-Trainer” credentialed to lead a scheduled Basic Training class; we now have 5 people who have completed that training. In June, we trained 4 new Team Captains, two to start new neighborhood teams for our program. We now have 10 FCC-licensed ham radio operators on our Radio Communications Committee. My sincere thank you to our members who are stepping into new roles to help our team grow. What wonderful neighbors we have.
Are you prepared for hurricane season? We are watching the tropical disturbances that are there today. Consider “following” our Facebook page for updates: https://www.facebook.com/LWRCERT
I look forward to seeing you in the neighborhood. Stay safe!

President, LWR CERT
Volunteer Opportunity:
Keep Manatee Beautiful comes to Lorraine Road
Local nonprofit Keep Manatee Beautiful is hosting a 1st Saturday Clean Up on Lorraine Road, tomorrow, Saturday, July 2 from 9 AM - Noon.

You are invited to join your fellow LWR CERT members and the entire LWR community for this Keep Manatee Beautiful event. Please wear your yellow vest. We will meet at the parking lot of Terry's Tree Service, 4304 Lorraine Road.

Keep Manatee Beautiful brings together volunteers to provide grassroots solutions to littering, illegal dumping, solid waste disposal, recycling, and beautification.
LWR CERT members will have an opportunity to refresh their Basic Training skills in an unique refresher course on Thursday, July 21 at 6:30 PM during the fastest review of Basic Training we’ve ever attempted. Nigel Pilling and his Training Committee have committed to no fast talking, just sharing important, concise information in under 121 minutes.

In just 2 hours members will refresh their CERT Basic Training skills as they participate in small group demonstrations, hear the latest updates and test they knowledge.

Recap: June Member Meeting
Thanks to our featured speaker, Cindy Underwood, Licensed Insurance Agent with The Auto Club Group, Lakewood Ranch, LWR CERT members learned defensive driving and driver safety tips at our June Member Meeting.

Did you know:
  • Using roadside assistance from your insurance company counts as a claim and could raise your insurance rate?
  • Taking a Defensive Driving Course could reduce your auto insurance rates? There are numerous online options including a Mature Driver Course through the State College of Florida, AAA, and AARP. Cindy is teaching a Senior Defensive Driver Program at the LWR YMCA Wed., Oct. 5. Contact her at 941.201.3553 for details.
  • Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles produces a Florida Crash Dashboard where you can view crash statistics by year, by county and by crash type?
  • You can easily report infrastructure and maintenance issues in Manatee County, by calling 311 or reporting the issue online.
  • Dash cams can capture vehicle accidents and provide proof for police in hit-and-run situations? Cindy suggests looking into Nextbase 622GW, Garmin Dash Cam 67W, and Garmin Dash Cam Mini 2.
Thank you to Bruce and Dana Bedford for their generous door prize donations.
The June Member Meeting was a 2022 Active Responder qualifying event.
