Tappan Zee Bridge, New York, NY |
I recently rode the train from Washington, DC to New York City and was mesmerized by the beauty and variety of bridges I saw along the way. As I marveled at the way they seemed to float over the water, I thought about how strong and powerful they were as they stood iconically, connecting communities. Bridges link people and places, while enabling relationships to develop that would otherwise be impossible.
At work on Monday I realized art serves as a bridge - connecting hospitals and their communities while building relationships. One of my favorite things about the work we do at DAS is helping hospitals build bridges and relationships through art.
Through participatory and community-based art programs, DAS helps hospitals create possibilities, foster new relationships and ignite partnerships. More importantly, through art, DAS is able to leave behind an infrastructure that allows hospitals to continue connecting with their communities year after year.
Not long ago, evidence-based design identified a need to bridge the gap between nature and healthcare. Art and architecture are now the bridge that brings the exterior healing qualities of nature to the interior of so many hospitals. I'm thrilled and humbled to be a part of that journey.
Here's to building beautiful bridges together!
Sincerely,
Barbara Harriman, IIDA

DAS Project Among the 2016 CODA Awards Top 100!
DAS is pleased to announce that the Henry E. Braselton Chapel at Northeast Georgia Medical Center is among the 2016 CODA Awards Top 100. Projects were selected by an international jury of leaders in the design and art fields and the winners highlight the best in the field, demonstrating the most successful integration of commissioned art into an interior, architectural or public space. Awards were given in the categories of: Commercial, Education, Healthcare, Hospitality, Institutional, Landscape, Liturgical, Public Spaces, Residential and Transportation.
About the Henry E. Braselton Chapel Project: A long held desire to see a modern, full-service hospital in the region found its fulfillment in Northeast Georgia Medical Center Braselton. Plans for the beautiful chapel offered a perfect opportunity for the Braselton family to honor Henry Edward Braselton, a founding father. The chapel was made possible through a collaborative project between Distinctive Art Source, artist Laura Mentor, the Braselton family and The Medical Center Foundation.
You can read more about the project here.

"Today I dropped by to see the chapel glass art. I was so taken I'm speechless. I could have spent hours there. Having grown up in this area I could so relate to the many features. Many related to the area and those special touches for the Braselton's themselves! Even the fraternity symbol! How did she do that?
I hope and believe they will be as touched as I. Thanks so much."

It was so nice to see our clients at Inova Women's Hospital and Inova Children's Hospital featured in
Healthcare Design Magazine along with the work of Wilmot Sanz. We thoroughly enjoyed working on the art program for this project!
In the same issue, our friends at Children's Health Andrew's Institute were mentioned in an article on the evolving field of sports medicine.
