In 1848 George Washington Frost and his bride Isabella Taylor came to Newmarket on their honeymoon--and never left. He accepted a job offer from his uncle, Mill Agent John Webster. In 1855 he became the company’s fifth mill agent. For three decades George and Isabella were involved in the community, church, political and social affairs of Newmarket. His children and stepsister grew up in the Agent’s House and attended schools here.
Presenter Greg Crumb shares stories of the Frost family, of Frost’s contributions to the NMCO and of his Civil War military service-- including recollections about him from fellow Civil War veteran Alanson Haines.

Happy August! NH Eats Local Month is here! We'll be posting about the whys and ways to eat local all month long, but to kick things off, we want to share how to participate in the 2022 NH Eats Local Challenge.
The challenge is simple (and delicious!):
1) Eat or buy from 5 local food locations in NH during the month of August,
2) Submit your locations online (link below) or via a paper form (available at our farmers' markets) for the chance to win local food prizes!
Bonus step! While you’re out eating local, snap a photo and tag @nheatslocal and the local farm or food business and use the hashtag #nheatslocalmonth.
Let us know if you have any questions and thank you for championing local food in the Granite State!

CONSERVATION CONNECTIONS
Overheard in the grocery store:
“I think I am seeing more fireflies than I have seen in any other summer.” And the cashier replied, “I think there are the same number of fireflies. Maybe you are just taking more time to appreciate summer nights.”
And how about you? Are you taking time to enjoy what summer is offering us here in Newmarket, NH, New England and beyond?
We are hoping you enjoy our town Conservation Commission properties, and local trails and what they offer for nature-viewing and exercise. Remember to stay hydrated out there, and do watch for ticks when you get home. We are glad to see how many people have commented on the Heron Point Trail, and want to send another THANK YOU to Amy Benson for the remarkable job on the trail project and CONGRATULATIONS to her for making this a new feature in our town’s outdoor program options. From photographers, plant enthusiasts, birdwatchers, and families looking for an easy hike, this is an ideal location! See for yourselves!
Our meetings, the second Thursday of each month, continue to have guest speakers as a standard part of our meetings. This month, we welcome Natch Greyes, an expert on carnivorous plants, and we’ll hear about those plants we can see right here in NH! Join us live on Face Book as it’s broadcast there as well as on Channel 13. Natch Greyes is an attorney with the NH Municipal Association, with a strong interest in conservation topics, but we are amazed to learn his passion and expertise with these plants! Join us, in person, Town Hall auditorium, downstairs, 7 PM for this or any of our meetings, second Thursday of each month.
Plans are in the works for the second annual CONSERVATION CONNECTIONS event, scheduled for Saturday, October 15. We’ll have several presentations and another suggested tour route for self-drive or a van opportunity again this year. We’re so glad the Newmarket Recreation Department can provide the van ride – join in on that and relax and learn about the sites on the tour. There will be information about the tour locations as we head in to September, but now, it’s a Save the Date notice for you. Last year, we had a lot of feedback which lead to a birdwatchers’ group that has met during some peak migration periods and has traveled (in the Rec Center vans!) to several great locations such as Plum Island! Our guide for those trips has been Richard Lutz, who was one of the guest presenters at last year’s event. We are looking for ideas about what you may like to learn more about, so if you have suggestions, send them to us via [email protected]
Our August meeting features guest Barbara Richter, Executive Director of the NH Association of Conservation Districts. She’ll share some highlights of the NH Legislative Session which has just concluded – so we can see what the state government and state representatives carved out of special interest to conservation commissions across the state. Newmarket fits in with such interesting geographic and geological features which can be affected by budgets and regulations from the State House. Join in for that meeting, where your Conservation Commissioners are also learning things the NHACC can do to be helpful to us so we can better serve you, the residents of Newmarket.
In September, we’ll have a training session about Conservation Easement Monitoring, by Emma Tutein, UNH Cooperative Extension. Easement monitoring is one of the primary tasks commissions across the state have annually. There are updates and best practices we’ll hear about – and you are always welcome to learn what we’re doing.
If you find this type of activity interesting, perhaps you are the very best candidate for joining our commission. We are looking for additional Alternate Members to join the commission. As an Associate, your input and ideas are welcome and encouraged! In the event we don’t have a quorum for a regularly scheduled meeting, the Alternate Member is given full membership for that meeting, and can vote on items on the agenda. We would love to have folks join us who are interested in things like organizing volunteer events (invasive species weed-pulling, Earth Day Clean Up,) photo displays, guest presenter ideas, and general help as we determine the plans for continued trail maintenance or how to go about master plan progress.) Thanks for considering volunteering with the Conservation Commission.
Watch evening skies for astronomy interests – several meteor showers create buzz in summer skies. The Dark Sky Society (www.darksky.org) is a valuable resource for you to check out and see what interests you from their professional viewpoints. And, as this column began with this newsletter, there are fireflies galore! NH has quite a few types of fireflies, although at first glance, they may appear the same and you might not discern their types. We endorse a simple summer eve, relaxing outdoors, and seeing what you see! If you want to learn more, web sites vetted include www.massaudubon.org or indepthnh.org. Of course, www.firefly.org is another source for you to learn more if your evening out enjoying them leads you to want more information.
Relish what summer brings you –take time to get outdoors and another route to take for enjoying the outdoors in Newmarket for you to consider would be renting a kayak form the Newmarket Recreation Department and paddle out of Schanda Park or from Piscassic Boat launch area. Great choices, great prices and reservations can be made through the rec department, 603-659-8581.
