Traffic/Safety Issues in Bluff Heights
by Donna Sievers

Are you one of the many parents, bike riders, dog walkers, or residents who are concerned about traffic issues in our neighborhood?

If so, the Board of the Bluff Heights Neighborhood Association needs your assistance.

Last year, several Board members met with the principal of Horace Mann, Long Beach police officers, Aliah Khan from Cindy Allen’s District 2 Office, and local residents to discuss what can be done to slow traffic in our neighborhood and around Horace Mann Elementary. At that time, Aliah Khan and I communicated with Joy Contreras, the City of Long Beach’s Community Relations Officer. It was our understanding that the city agreed to analyze the needs in Bluff Heights and promised to repaint missing or faded crosswalks before school started again in September 2022. Unfortunately, that has not yet happened.
Let’s Drink! Inside the Vision of Buvons Wine Bar and Shop

Inspired by shops in Paris where visitors can purchase wine to take away or drink on-site, Alicia Kemper had long dreamed of creating a space that focuses on wine and community. In 2021, she made that dream a reality when she opened Buvons (pronounced “boo-VOHN,” meaning “let’s drink” in French) Wine Bar and Shop in Long Beach’s Zaferia neighborhood.
Walk to School Week:
March 20-24, 2023

Mark your calendars and join the walkers to Horace Mann Elementary School on March 20, 21, 22, 23, and 24.

You might ask, “WHY should we walk our kids to school?” Or, you might say, “It’s too far.” Or “I’m too busy…too tired…too rushed.”

Bluff Heights Geography with Young Children

In thinking about how very young children can understand the concept of geography and, in turn, neighborhoods, especially one as beautiful as Bluff Heights, I discovered that there are simple ways to accomplish this with children from ages 3-5.
The Birth of the Wonderful Historic Bluff Heights District

The Bluff Heights Historic Landmark District is a residential area that includes homes generally situated east of Junipero Avenue, west of Redondo Avenue, south of 4th Street, and north of Broadway. It became an official Historic Landmark District on July 13, 2004, by action and ordinance of the Long Beach City Council.
Each month we will publish a photograph from our neighborhood. The photo above was taken by Rick Schank of something we don't see too often; a street rainbow caused by an oil film thinned by rain water. If you have photos that highlight the beauty and uniqueness of our neighborhood, please send them to info@bluffheights.org

Is it Time to Trim your Waste-Line?
It's really simple to trim your "Waste-Line!" All you need to do is collect your e-waste, hazardous waste, and/or old tire waste and bring it to one of three local collection centers under the conditions set by the City of Long Beach on this flyer.
You will feel much lighter now that you took care of those extra notches on your Waste-Line! Doesn't being a loser feel good?
