Horace Mann Elementary School Rocks
By Theresa Marino

If you pass by the playground at Horace Mann Elementary School bordering 3rd Street on the north, you will see a mural of the school’s mascot, an Orca whale, with the words “Mann School Rocks.” Last week, I interviewed Mrs. Fiala, who is in her fifth year at Mann. Horace Mann is our hidden gem of a school in Bluff Heights. They really do take great care of our children, our families and our community. Every child and adult will agree that there is something special here.
For the Love of Trees – Part 3
By Maria Kootsikas

There are 60 trees on the city list of approved trees that may be planted in your parkway. Having so many choices might be a paradox until you consider that all trees are not created equal; however, there is a perfect tree for every spot. The Bluff Heights Neighborhood Association (BHNA) canvassed a small section of Bluff Heights to find that there are almost 50 trees missing from different parkways. This small survey provides a snapshot within the perimeter of Bluff Heights showing a need for replacement parkway trees. Over a year ago, several beautiful magnolias were removed on Vista Street due to disease. BHNA contacted the city of Long Beach to learn that this area can receive up to 50 trees to be planted at one time with support from the community.
An Interview with a Good Neighborhood Doctor

The first impression was a little strange. When I went to visit local chiropractor Dr. James Dohn at his business address of 3215 East Broadway (right across the street from the now-closed Café Piccolo), I found a small, neatly lettered sign that said “For entry to Dr. Dohn’s office please go around back to an alley entrance – DO NOT ENTER BY THIS DOOR!”

The Giver of Stars

In today’s world, we can read a book on a mobile device, by listening in the car, or the old-fashioned way with a book in your lap. It’s all about the words, not the way you read them.
