Spring Lessons
by Lisa Robbins
The spring equinox is a balancing act
Celebrating the light that follows darkness
And gathering energy for a new season of life.
Shaking off the slumber of winter, spring slowly unfolds.
The wind doesn't want to let go just yet --
She spends all her energy flailing and resisting
Until, worn out, she begins to soften and settle down,
Allowing the lengthening days to gently warm her soul.
Even as the edge of the pond shimmers with ice,
The peepers come alive with their endless chorus.
Echoing into the night, they find each other one by one
And each pair creates a link to future seasons.
The first of the wildflowers stretch themselves awake,
Rooted and reaching, eager for raindrops and sunlight.
Their ancestors have passed down their wisdom
And every new bud knows how to prepare for this seasonal alchemy.
As each blossom reveals its sacred geometry,
A sea of color surges across this ancient river valley.
I want to sit amongst the bluebells in stillness
And drink in their grace and perfection.
These fleeting beauties bestow their lessons upon me:
How to be patient, how to trust in my own timing.
How to honor those who came before me, how to be in community.
How to appreciate the ephemeral nature of things
And rest in the hope of spring.
