“I can do hard things” is not the same as “I can do impossible things.”
And things that feel impossible are often quite doable, they just need to be broken into smaller, bite-sized changes instead of monumental, life-altering leaps.
Let’s review how to set S.M.A.R.T. goals.
S — Specific
Don’t say “do better.” Say what you’re doing, how you’re doing it, and for whom.
M — Measurable
If you can’t measure it, you can’t brag about it (or fix it).
A — Achievable
Dream big, yes—but not “learn a new language by Tuesday” big.
R — Relevant
Ask yourself: Does this actually matter, or are we just staying busy?
T — Time-bound
“Someday” is not a deadline. Pick a date.
The new year is just another day on the calendar. There’s no checkered flag or horn announcing the “right” time to start something new. Maybe it was January 1. Maybe it was Monday. Or maybe it will be next month, when you finally find the motivation to tackle that next task or launch the blue-sky idea that’s been running laps around your brain.
No matter when you say “GO,” be S.M.A.R.T. about it.
Happy New Year!
