I keep thinking about change. The thoughts that keep swirling are based on degrees of change. We make these turns in life, sometimes a complete 180° and everyone's heads turn. Even a radical 90° shift forces people to take notice. A solid 45° drift will also be apparent in short order. But what has taken up space in my thoughts, is the question, what about the 1°? What about the small shifts and maneuvers that we make that simply go unnoticed? How do we remain committed and enthusiastic about the work that we do, when what we're working toward doesn't feel on the radar? In my best attempt to create encouraging momentum for you, I'd offer up this thought, one degree change is the change that you possess control of.
One degree shifts do not usually equate to trophies and accolades, the result is less impressive. One degree transitions go unnoticed by peers. One degree is small. And the reality is, is that one degree will remain hidden if one degree stays one degree. The power of small change is when it's built upon. When the one degree becomes engrained and established, it is to be celebrated, then immediately challenged by the next one degree of change. With time, the layering of single degree maneuvers mirror that of a complete 180°. The gradual and steadfast pitch in a new direction eventual alters a course in a way that forces others to take notice. Those in close proximity begin to ask questions. And the ability to share learned information, harnessed by the waymaker, creates capacity for leadership. And leaders, create change.
There will always be 180s in life. Things change. Every day. All the time. Some changes are radical and some are so small they will go completely unnoticed. Press pause today. Pause and reflect on the one degree changes happening around you. Celebrate them! Be mindful to the learning process and ponder the next one degree maneuver. And remember, be ready to share the information gathered so that you may become a leader to those you inspire and take notice.
