Happenings!

JHU Watkins Day of Service

In June, Art with a Heart had the opportunity to participate in Dr. Watkins Day of Service at the Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center. The Day of Service included activities facilitated by multiple nonprofits to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Levi Watkins, a renowned surgeon and civil rights activist who invented the heart defibrillator. Art with a Heart engaged over 100 Johns Hopkins staff, faculty, and patients who each created a painted heart on 3x3 inch canvases. All of the hearts have been assembled together to create a meaningful installation for the Outpatient Center.

Programming

In June, Art with a Heart completed its 15th school year as an arts partner in the Baltimore City Public School System. This school year, Art with a Heart worked with 17 schools and provided over 10,000 classes to elementary and middle school students.

Students at Lakeland Elementary Middle celebrated the end of the year with wings to carry them forward!! All the students helped create the community mural that is a fun and colorful addition to the school. While the school year has finished, Art with a Heart's out-of-school time programs continue. Pupils in the adult Art with a Heart classes at the University of Maryland Community Engagement Center enjoyed a "Chat and Paint" night inspired by undersea views and the senior classes created abstract oil pastel designs inspired by artist, Alan Medeiros.

Special Projects

The Special Projects team had a blast this month engaging with students at Sharp-Leadenhall Elementary/Middle, Curtis Bay Elementary School, and Johnston Square Elementary. In the fourth and final residency of the year at Sharp-Leadenhall, students made paper mache hands from self-constructed armatures. In preparation for mixed-media mosaic murals, students at Curtis Bay painted and at Johnston Square, students created artistic elements that will be installed in early July.

Community Service and Public Art

In June, the Community Service and Public Art team completed the fourth and final sculpture to honor the Weinberg Foundation's Alumni Mission Trip to Israel. The completed sculpture represents the work of dedicated Art with a Heart staff, interns, and volunteers. The sculpture depicts a combination of the elements of the three original sculptures installed in Ashkelon, Israel. Also during June, work continued on the Beth El Congregation mosaic with the help of hundreds of volunteers. A sneak peek of one of the sections is below! Finally, on June 10th, Art with a Heart staff and volunteers engaged with community members to help celebrate Creative City Public Charter School's 10th anniversary!

HeARTworks/HeARTwares

HeARTworks is gearing up for a productive and meaningful summer! But before we "dive" into summer programs, the team has enjoyed connecting with many of its partners. ¡Adelante Latina! included HeARTwares in one of the stops on their "College Bootcamp" program. The HeARTworks team facilitated an art workshop with the Elijah Cummings Youth Program cohort to create handmade gifts for host families when the fellows travel to Israel in July. And, summer break classes began at Woodbourne Center, where students are exercising their creative muscle and practicing mindfulness before the summer school session begins.

Art of Leadership

Congratulations to the leaders of Cohort 8 on their graduation! Students and their families gathered to celebrate and to look back on a year of learning, growth, and connection. Art with a Heart is proud of all the graduates, who have now joined the growing Art of Leadership Alumni Network of 148 leaders. A sincere thanks to all the parents, Art of Leadership Advisory Board members, Art with a Heart's Board of Directors, guest speakers, facilitators, and everyone who made another exceptional year possible.

Thank You Volunteers!

Art with a Heart is grateful for the volunteers who shared their time and talent with the organization during the month of June: Under Armour, Jewish Community Services, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church (visiting all the way from Ohio!), and Peabody Conservatory staff members!
