This week we celebrated February 2nd, a day when thousands gather around a groundhog and ask him to predict our future. Will winter linger, or will spring arrive early? This year the prediction has been made, and once again I would like to remind you that a groundhog is a groundhog and not a weatherman.
"Punxsutawney Phil's weather predictions are historically inaccurate, boasting only about a 35% to 39% success rate, which is lower than random chance." -Google AI Overview
I only pay attention to Groundhogs Day on Groundhogs Day. The outcome of the day has never required a calendar update or initiated a countdown for springs arrival because let's face it, spring will come when spring will come. However, Groundhogs Day lands right in the heart of the winter season, and for good reason. It offers us a sliver of hope that the cold harsh weather will end sooner rather than later.
Of course, weather cannot be guaranteed nor persuaded to be anything but weather: unpredictable. Just like weather, life changes course without much warning. A forecast can guide us, but it’s never a guarantee. Not even a prediction from a groundhog, or a meteorologist for that matter, is 100% accurate, and that’s okay. Learning to adapt when plans shift is often just as important as planning in the first place.
So we will keep on keeping on during these winter months. Yes it will still be cold and yes we will probably see more snow, but one thing is for certain, spring will eventually come. And when it does, we’ll trade snowbanks for rain puddles, and i will find something else to write blogs about.
