"I'm Starting to See the Truth"
By Carrie Smith
Gracehaven Case Manager

When I met “Valerie” (14 years old), she was resistant to all forms of help and stated plainly that no one would be able to convince her that her attitude needed to change. She didn't want to be a part of the Gracehaven community, she wasn't interested in discussing the negative patterns in her relationships, and she was frequently starting physical altercations and skipping school.

Recently, she has started to warm up to me during our meetings in case management, and has started to take responsibility for her contribution when she is in conflict. She has become more motivated towards her schoolwork and has a dream of becoming a pediatric oncologist!

When I met with her this week, she was bubbly and excited about how she is pursuing her goals, becoming more self-aware, more willing to engage with others in meaningful ways and even be a role model to girls who are newer to Gracehaven.

About a month ago she told me that she felt like no one was her supporter, that there was no one "in her corner." When I followed up about that this week she smiled and said, "I think I said that because I felt that way in the moment. But I'm starting to see the truth now. I have a lot of supporters, and people really want to help me and believe that I can do great things. I am learning how to talk about what I feel and want and need in a way where others can actually know me."

Valerie used to be disinterested in spiritual things. Now she reads her Bible when she can't sleep at night. Please pray for Valerie that she will see Jesus' love for her and continue to play an active part in her own growth!
About Carrie Smith:
Carrie was an intern for YFC when she was in high school, and interned again with Gracehaven from January-May of this year. She graduated in May with a degree in Social and Human Services from Columbus State. Her passion is for seeing survivors of sex trafficking and high-risk children understand how much God loves and values them, and for all people to live out their potential for a life full of the grace of Jesus.
At the House
We have girls in the house ranging in ages from 14-18. They were in a dance recital after completing their Hip Hop class and very much enjoyed it. They are now taking pottery and gymnastics, and enjoy the gymnastics so much they'd like to practice at home. If you have a gym mat you'd like to donate, please contact Brooke Pollard at bpollard@gracehaven.me.

Summer activities have included a Mandisa concert at Rock the Lake, the Zoo, the Wilds, spa days at the house, swimming (and learning how to swim).

Thanks to our dedicated staff and volunteers, school grades have been on the rise this summer -- the Holy Spirit is definitely at work!
The girls are also enjoying working in the vegetable garden and eating the harvest! Thanks to our volunteers who helped them plant the garden and teach them how to tend to it.
Unique Opportunities to Serve
We are looking for volunteers to help out at the house. We need people to work directly with the girls, or in more behind the scenes tasks.

9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Help us clean the house and work on maintenance issues.

4 p.m. - 8 p.m. Work with the girls in after-school activities: assist them with laundry, chores, cook dinner, etc.
If you're interested in learning more, contact Brooke Pollard at 614.302.9515 or email at bpollard@gracehaven.me .

Getting the Word Out
Panel participants from left to right: Tianna Lee, Jen Stokes (Gracehaven), Tracy Taylor, Ron O'Brien (Franklin County Prosecutor), Tyrone Martin, Lasheyl Stroud (Magistrate) and Laura Stahr (Deputy Sheriff).
Gracehaven participated in a panel discussion at the "Safety, Stalking and Domestic Violence" workshop. About 25 teen girls learned about various topics including sexting and laws regarding teens, the court system, stalking and harassment, cyberbullying and social media, and sex trafficking. We're grateful to be included in this event and help share about how to recognize and respond to sex trafficking.

If you would like to request a Gracehaven speaker to come to your meeting or event, call us at 614.302.9515 or email at info@gracehaven.me .
A Survivor's Story
We are so grateful to Stephanie. She is a long-time trafficking survivor who now volunteers with our girls by helping them with their therapy. She shares her personal experiences and relates to them like no one can. She has taught them that they do have self worth and hope for their future. And most importantly, she helps them see how much God loves them and wants good for their lives. The girls LOVE her, and so do we.
What Is a "Button Boutique"?
The girls at the Gracehaven House love the "Button Boutique." This is a "shop" that we have set up that carries an assortment of items...from hair accessories to office supplies. When we catch a girl being "good," we award them with a button. When they collect enough buttons they can shop in the boutique. This is a great success both in encouraging the girls toward positive behavior and helping them feel loved and appreciated. The girls have requested the following items be included in the Boutique. Please consider how you can help!
Fanny packs
Gel pens
Perfume/Body Spray (Bath and Body Works if possible)
Lotion
Earrings
Watches
Make-up Brushes
Make-up (for dark complexions)
Planners/Calendars
Head Bands (preferably black)
Room Spray
String Lights
Robes
Reusable Water Bottles
Special Boutique Need
The girls listen to music during their "Me" time, just before bed. If they are making good progress in their behavior and with their school grades, they can " buy" iTunes Gift Cards in the Button Boutique. Please consider donating iTunes cards and/or ear buds or headphones. These are special treats that the girls very much enjoy receiving. Email Brooke Pollard if you'd like to help.
