The Upper Chesapeake Mosaic: A Grand Reveal

This month, Art with a Heart celebrated the unveiling of the UM Upper Chesapeake Medical Center Bel Air mosaic. The 19' x 8' mosaic covers roughly 150 square feet and includes thousands of individually cut, multi-colored pieces of glass, ceramics, and personalized river rocks. With hundreds of community members sharing in the creation of this installation, including hospital staff, administration, and patients, our team is grateful for the collaboration and spirit of healing and creativity that brought this vibrant work of art to life.

Special Projects

HeARTwares was buzzing with creativity as Art with a Heart celebrated its 26th birthday. Over 100 community members of all ages joined the Art with a Heart team in helping to create this special one of a kind mural. The energy was contagious and we were thrilled to see both new and familiar faces in our space—a beautiful reminder of the power of art to bring people together!

Programming

The Art with a Heart programming team started Women’s History Month by engaging with staff from the University of Maryland Baltimore at their annual symposium. The women created mixed media flower pots using glass, ceramics, and paint - all while in conversation about maintaining a growth mindset and goal setting. In addition, students in Art with a Heart school programs learned about artist Faith Ringgold and created self-portraits inspired by her book, Tar Beach. Other students had a great time celebrating Dr. Seuss Day by creating whimsical art inspired by his colorful illustrations.

Community Art and Service

The Community Art & Service enjoyed several collaborative projects this month. The team partnered with Kennedy Krieger Institute at their CORE Communities Carnival for a joyful mosaic project. At Third Space, community members enjoyed an evening of creativity while painting whimsical birdhouses for an upcoming outdoor installation. And, thanks to a supportive collaboration with Constellation, St. Francis Neighborhood Center students explored sustainability by building city block art pieces that will form a nearly 50-square-foot cityscape for their Center.

HeARTworks/HeARTwares

During March, the HeARTworks apprentices have been busy creating fresh spring products including, painted terra cotta pots, framed painted phrases, and denim jacket patches. And speaking of denim jackets, the apprentices will soon be launching a new and exciting custom-painted denim jacket line following a hands-on workshop with Art with a Heart's Product Development Associate, Nicole.

Art of Leadership

As part of the Art of Leadership session on Immigration and Migration, the leaders visited Tola’s Room, where Creative Director Christina Delgado guided the group through vibrant Puerto Rican cultural displays and stories of migration, identity, and resilience. The group also shared a Puerto Rican meal from Owl’s Corner Cafe, experiencing the culture through food. To conclude the evening, the students engaged with a panel of guests—parents of Art of Leadership alums from Brazil, South Korea, India, and Egypt. The guests shared their immigration journeys, offering students powerful insights into the courage, challenges, and evolving identities across generations.

Impressionists!

In March, our young professional volunteer group, The Impressionists, kept the creative energy flowing at Art with a Heart by crafting magnets, flower petals, and bookmarks for upcoming projects. The Impressionists meet the second and fourth Thursdays each month to connect, create, and give back in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. Join us on April 9th at the Avenue and April 23rd at the Mill.
