Programming

In August, as the end of summer programming approached, the Art with a Heart team found themselves reflecting on the growth, fun, and numerous benefits our students experienced. Art with a Heart cultivated a summer curriculum that included engaging, creative projects and provided students with the opportunity to develop their artistic skills and explore new mediums and techniques. The collaborative and supportive environment fostered in Art with a Heart classrooms provided a sense of community, allowing students to form lasting friendships and gain inspiration from their peers. Not only did the students find joy and fulfillment in their artwork, they also discovered increased self-confidence, improved problem-solving abilities, and a developed deeper appreciation for the arts. The end of summer art programming marked both the conclusion of a memorable journey and the beginning of a lifelong love for artistic expression.

Special Projects

The Special Projects team proudly completed and installed a memorial mural celebrating the life of the late Chef Connie Johnson at Liberty Rec Center. The mural is emblematic of Art with a Heart's robust internship program, as it was designed and executed by MICA interdisciplinary graduate intern, Grusha Sabharwal and Towson University illustration undergraduate intern, Kate Kuc.

Community Service and Public Art

This month, the Community Service and Public Art team completed a large-scale mosaic project for Beth El Congregation. This awe-inspiring, mixed media mosaic mural celebrates Beth El Congregation's 25th Anniversary. The project engaged over 1,000 individuals of all ages from both the Beth El and the Art with a Heart communities. Stay tuned for pictures of the completed installation in the coming weeks.

Also during August, the Art with a Heart team enjoyed engaging with families at the AHC Poe Homes Relocation event. Guests made sun catchers using recycled CDs and a variety of materials to hang in their new homes being celebrated at the event.

Art of Leadership

In August, the 9th Cohort of the Art of Leadership convened for their first two sessions. During the first meeting, the leaders enjoyed learning about each other, reviewed program goals, community expectations, and discussed the definition of leadership. The group enjoyed team building activities, dinner, and casual conversation. A unanimous highlight of the first session was hearing from our guest speaker, CJ Gross. CJ is an author, TEDx speaker, and the founder of Ascension Worldwide, Students were able to talk with CJ about his book, What's Your Zip Code Story? and asked him important and interesting questions about class bias and racial disparity. CJ encouraged students to leave their comfort zone (and their zip codes) and learn about different people, places and cultures.

During the second session, students experienced a bus tour through Baltimore to better understand how concepts of race and class shaped the history of the city, still define current issues and disparities, and how as leaders they can learn from the past to help change the course of the future.

Mia and Sache Jones guided the tour through north, west, and south Baltimore. Stops were made at Restoration Gardens, New Song Academy, and the University of Maryland Medical Center to see some of Art with a Heart's public art installations in the various communities. Upon return to Art with a Heart, the leaders enjoyed dinner and informal conversations. After dinner, a facilitated activity lead to an impactful discussion and reflections by the students who shared personal experiences with class and race. The leaders did an excellent job building empathy and community trust, and appreciating diverse perspectives.

HeARTworks/HeARTwares

August brought the conclusion of another successful summer of the HeARTworks program with 125 students and over 500 hours of work. One of the most unique and ambitious projects was the collaborative mural (below) created with graphic design software by Art with a Heart YouthWorkers at Harlem Park Recreation Center. The mural was painted on a mobile wall for all in the center to enjoy. And speaking of enjoyment, don't forget to mark your calendars for Shop and Bop on Thursday, September 7th from 5pm to 8pm at Art with a Heart.
