“I was observing from the sidelines.”

Deedee,

In December, both Mwema Bertin (ROYS Country Leader in DRC) and Isaac Okoth (ROYS Regional Leader in Kenya), sent us ministry reports that exemplified an important principle Reach Out Youth Solutions teaches regularly to leaders.

From Mwema…

"Young leaders that I invested in led the forum while I was observing from the sidelines.”

From Isaac…

"Last Sunday youth led the worship service and preached during the sermon. Thanks to God for the young upcoming ministers.”

The principle found in Jesus’ life and ministry that is being modeled by Mwema and Isaac is…

The Progression of the Leadership Team:

I do it. (Luke 4:31-37, 38-44)

I do it and they are with me. (Luke 5:1-11)

They do it and I am with them. (Luke 10:1-17)

They do it and I am in the background to encourage. (Luke 24:44-49 and Acts)

Jesus-Focused Youth Ministry, page 47

Here’s a question for each of us to consider as we lead…families…staff...ministries…children…those we are discipling…those we are training: How well are we living out the progression of the leadership team principle? Are we equipping, empowering, and releasing others to do what we have been doing and/or what they could be doing?

Maybe your next step in this process is investing in a student who will lead a small group or teach a lesson this year.

Maybe your next step is teaching your kids how to make the meal that you’ve always made for dinner.

Maybe your next step is being a contributing member of the team that is putting together a particular event or experience, but not the dominant decision-making member on the team.

Maybe your next step is having an intentional conversation with someone to explain the “why” behind your actions, or to hear their thoughts on “new” ways to accomplish a particular task or goal.

Each of these decisions move us in the direction of passing the baton, successfully, to the next generation!

Mwema wrote, “It is important to invest into this young generation of leaders who will in turn impact their generation.”

Amen!

God, this year help us not only see the situations and circumstances you’ve placed us in to invest in the next generation, but courageously take the steps necessary to make the most of those opportunities (Eph 4:17), as we honor You by living more and more like Jesus!

Blessings,
