Was she truly going to be abortion-minded as her paperwork and her red color-coded appointment on the schedule suggested, or was she just having difficulty coming to grips with her 12-week pregnancy? Circumstances looked grim. In fact, the prospect of abortion seemed very likely!

“Emily” had previously had an abortion and was prepared to do it again. Although she professed to being born again – rescued from a life distinctively opposed to God’s design in marriage – her heart was still hardened from wounds embedded in her past when faced with this new test of faith.

I escorted "Emily" to the ultrasound room where I initially noted the hardness and stoicism, but I felt also there was much more going on underneath. There was still a warmness about her, and it increased tenfold when the ultrasound monitor sprung to life with the baby’s heartbeat and the little one dancing around inside her womb. Tears formed in her eyes, and she quickly wiped them away. “It’s just a shame," she said, “because I cannot have a baby right now. I will NOT have a baby right now.”

I met with her for another hour and a half following the ultrasound. I felt the Holy Spirit moving in the room as we talked, so I just stayed and prayed for Him to lead and for me to follow. The first thing the Holy Spirit revealed to me was that “Emily” was a child of God and my sister in Christ, and my eyes saw her as such. The second thing revealed to me was that she was hurting terribly and running from God.

She let me witness to her as I followed promptings by the Holy Spirit. I shared some of my testimony and experience during a time in my life when I too had been running from God, had made some bad decisions and had faced very serious and hard consequences as a result of those decisions. She cried. I cried. "Emily" let me pray for her. Her heart seemed softened. I tried not to get my hopes up, but I knew anything was possible with God. I didn’t know what she would do, but I felt that this baby had a chance.

A week later, I signed in to Daybreak’s secure network and began to get ready for the day. On my screen, I saw I had a message under my Client Conversation tab. It was a note from “Emily” that said: “Nurse Katie, I wanted you to know that I have decided to keep the baby. I am considering adoption. I wanted to thank you. Love, Emily”. I could hardly contain my joy! To God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ be all the glory and praise!

What a wonderful time everyone had at Daybreak's 9th Annual 5K Run/Walk on October 4! Boys and girls, men and women, ages 3 to 74, competed in this year's 5K, timed by Jud Brooker of Timing, Inc. He created a webpage of the race results you can find here: https://www.webscorer.com/race?raceid=408662. Congrats to our OVERALL MALE AND FEMALE WINNERS: Ben Mora with a time of 19:01.8 and Melody Venegas timed at 24:28.3.

Along with the race, everyone enjoyed, once again this year, a delicious pancake breakfast compliments of First Presbyterian's Chef Richard Wolford. Thank you, Chef! And thanks to Shandon Baptist Church for allowing us to use their portable PA system to announce the 5K winners and top fundraisers. And many, many thanks to our volunteers, client advocates, male mentors, office assistants, board of directors and staff for supporting this event with their hands-on assistance and fervent prayers before, during and after the race.

Also, we want to thank all of the participants and 2025 5K sponsors (see below). It's because of you all that the 5K costs were completely covered before the race started!

Supporting mothers who choose life for their babies involves a lot of resources, including a lot of diapers! And you can help us re-stock our diaper supply by way of a friendly competition between the Gamecock and Tiger fans of our donor base. It’s called “Daybreak’s 3rd Annual Diaper Bowl: Dollars for Diapers” and runs through midnight on November 30. The Gamecocks have won the first two Daybreak Diaper Bowls, giving us the means to purchase EveryLife diapers for our clients. Why EveryLife diapers? Here’s why:

EveryLife is an unapologetically Christian company that does not support organizations that destroy innocent life. Every other major diaper manufacturer, including Huggies and Pampers, includes coverage for abortions in their employee benefits plans, in addition to direct support for Planned Parenthood. EveryLife does not, and that is a company we love to support!

If you would like to join in this friendly competition, there are two ways you can do so:

  1. Go to https://www.kindridgiving.com/App/Giving/daybreakministries. The webpage will open to the “One-time” giving tab. Then go to the “Fund” dropdown box and choose either “Gamecock Diapers” or “Tiger Diapers” to make your donation.
  2. You can simply write a check to Daybreak and include your team of choice “Gamecock Diapers” or “Tiger Diapers” on the memo line of the check. And then mail your check to: Daybreak LifeCare Center, 1601 St. Julian Place, Columbia, SC 29204.

We will be providing statuses along the way on social media to keep you in the loop, and we will announce the winner after November 30. Of course, the real winners will be our clients, who will have access to a fresh supply of diapers from a pro-life manufacturer whose creed is consistent with its product.

As always, we thank you in advance for your support in this life-affirming, life-changing ministry.

Client Advocate

"I came to Daybreak in March of 2025. Since I have been serving, I have been reminded that each client is unique and it’s important to let the Lord lead. This is a battle for life and it’s impossible without Jesus ministering to the hearts of these moms.

"We come alongside women who often have little support and have learned reasons not to trust. These moms are learning not just that we care, but that Jesus sees them and He cares."
