Description:

Day #1 - July 19th:

This training begins with the historical overview of the therapeutic use of sand and miniatures, followed by a discussion of the differences between the original Jungian Sandplay from later Psycho-dynamically oriented Sandtray Play Therapy modalities. This is followed by exploration of the tools required for Sandtray Play therapy; the sandtray, sand, water, and miniature figures, along with a related experiential exercise. The recommended practice technique will be reviewed, and rationale for child and adult clients will be demonstrated and explained.

Objectives:

  1. State the history and evolution of the therapeutic use of sand and miniature figures.
  2. Identify three differentiating aspects of the original Sandplay from later Sandtray Play Therapy modalities.
  3. Identify the clinical significance of the sandtray, sand, water, and miniature figures.
  4. Demonstrate the basic practice technique for using Sandtray Play Therapy with children and adolescents.

Day #2 - July 20th:

The focus will be on aspects to consider in order to understand the symbolic imagery created by clients engaging in Sandtray Play therapy, including the choice of dry or wet sand, creation of landscape forms, spatial configurations, use of miniatures, expression of an accompanying narrative or story, and sequential progression of themes. Each of these aspects will be illustrated with case examples. The efficacy of Sandplay and Sandtray therapies as treatment modalities for clients who have experienced significant trauma will be emphasized and explained. Day two will conclude with presentation of a Sandtray case.

Objectives:

  1. Identify five important aspects to consider when understanding and interpreting Sandtray therapy imagery.
  2. Explain the significance and meaning of a client beginning Sandtray therapy by choosing dry sand and then transitioning to using wet sand.
  3. Identify three reasons why Sandtray therapy is an effective modality for working with clients who have experienced trauma.
  4. Analyze the progression of themes in a series of 5 sequential sandtrays.
