We are writing to share important information regarding upcoming changes to federal student aid programs, student loan repayment plans, and college accountability measures under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA). Please review this chart outlining all federal changes related to OBBBA (PDF) scheduled to take effect on July 1, 2026.
Financial aid conversations can feel complex and, at times, overwhelming for students and families. Many of you serve as trusted, steady voices during moments of uncertainty. As these federal changes approach, it is essential that we stay informed and aligned to support our community with clarity and empathy.
We are particularly concerned about changes to the Parent PLUS Loan program and the elimination of the Graduate PLUS Loan for first-time borrowers after July 1, 2026:
Parent PLUS Loan Changes
-
New borrowing limits: $20,000 per year and $65,000 lifetime per student.
-
Exception for continuing students: Parents of students who borrowed any federal loan prior to July 1, 2026, and who maintain continuous enrollment may continue to borrow up to the cost of attendance minus other aid for up to three academic years or until degree completion, whichever comes first.
-
Leave of absence: Any leave of absence will void this exception.
Graduate PLUS Loans
- Eliminated for new borrowers beginning July 1, 2026.
-
Continuing students who borrowed prior to July 1, 2026, and maintain continuous enrollment may continue borrowing under the same exception described above.
-
Leave of absence: Any leave of absence will void this exception.
