EXHIBITION STATEMENT Chef Series

Created with the blend of oil and chalk pastel. Acrylic paint is added for a sharp tight color blend. I refer to my style of design as “social abstract “ with people always being the main focus in each artwork.

Inspired by the people who cook for the ones they love. They pass down the traditions and recipes generation to generation. My chefs are someone who cooks to be compensated by the smiles of family and laughter of friends.

ABOUT JANET BARNES

Janet Barnes is an artist living and creating in Northern California. Her paintings reflect the values of what is most important to her in life. The consistent themes within all of Janet’s paintings are community and belonging, whether it be with family sharing daily experiences at the dinner table, musicians practicing for their performances, or a mother preparing dinner for her family.

Janet will tell you that Jacob Lawrence, who was one of the most important artist of the 20th century, had a profound effect on her paintings. His influence can be seen in her use of bold bright colors and her depiction of everyday life. She recently had one of her, Dinnertime Series, artworks Juried into the Crocker Art Museum Annual Silent Auction 2022. Janet has had the honor of being a resident artist at Joyce Gordon Gallery for the past nine years. She is also a long time exhibiting artist for the 100 Black Men Of The Bay Area San Francisco Ca., Fairfield Visual Arts Association Fairfield Ca., and Mayor London Breed/ Supervisor Malia Cohen Black History Month Celebration San Francisco Ca.

BAHIYA SPAULDING

EXHIBITION STATEMENT
Inspired by my grandma’s house and the women I watched and taught me how to cook. The pots, pans, skillets, and utensils that they used. It’s the stories, the laughter, and the memories I have from sitting at the kitchen table.

ARTIST STATEMENT
My art is how I express various aspects of myself whether that be my personal growth, insight or transformation. It’s also my means of connecting the inner workings of my thoughts, feelings and perceptions with life experiences.
