One Last Hurrah: End-of-Season Cleaning and Sanitizing of Harvest Tools

Micah Thibodeau-Williams, Produce Safety Technician

As we are approaching the end of harvest season, it will soon be time to consider end-of-season tasks and wrap-up protocols. Follow the link below to learn more about how your operation can best prepare harvest tools for long-term storage.

Preparing for Winter Cold Storage

Calli Tomasoski, Produce Safety Technician

Many farms throughout Michigan rely on winter storage beyond the growing season to extend their market season. While functional, improper storage conditions can lead to the contamination of product. Click the link below to learn more.

Technology Lending Library

Phil Tocco, MSU Extension Educator

Have you ever thought a small piece of produce safety technology might make

complying with the demands of audits and inspections easier, but cringed when you

found out how much it cost? Have you ever been able to spend the money on the

equipment, but wished you could try before you buy it? If you answered yes to any of

those questions, you might benefit from a program developed by the North Central

Regional Food Safety Modernization Act Center (NCR FSMA Center).

The NCR FSMA Center is launching a program where an operation can try a small

piece of produce safety technology for up to 90 days, then return it. We currently have

Charm Nova Lum II ATP meters that will come with 25 swabs and a 1-gallon byoplanet

cordless electrostatic backpack sprayer that will come with 1 gallon of sanitizer for rent.

These items can be rented, free of charge, through MSU Extension’s Agrifood Safety

Program.

This is a work in progress, and we would like to add equipment that YOU WANT to try. If

there are things you’d like to try that fit within the constraints we have (under $5,000 and

portable enough to fit in a sedan) we are open to getting you the equipment to rent and

return to us. If you’d like to discuss a rental, please reach out to Phil Tocco at tocco@msu.edu.

FSMA Ag Water Rule Support Line

Phil Tocco, MSU Extension Educator

Alison Buskirk, MSU Digital Media Designer

Navigating the safe use of agricultural water on the farm can raise a lot of questions for produce growers, especially with the new FSMA Produce Safety Rule Pre-Harvest Ag Water requirements.

Starting April 16, 2026, the North Central Region (NCR) Center for FSMA Training is launching a free Agricultural Water Rule Support Line to answer farm-specific questions. This educational service is intended to support growers in understanding and implementing produce safety practices related to agricultural water.

How it works:

  • Call 1-855-928-7785 (WATR RUL) to speak directly with a member of our produce safety team about your agricultural water questions or concerns.
  • If additional expertise is needed, your question may be reviewed by a group of produce safety specialists, and you will receive a response within 72 hours.

The support line will be available beginning April 16 and will operate Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am to 4pm Eastern Time.
