Dear District 113 Community,
I am writing to make you aware of a concerning situation about an individual who previously served as a volunteer assistant wrestling coach at Deerfield High School.
District 113 has been contacted by a reporter covering a court case in McHenry County. According to court records, the case involves multiple counts of possession of child pornography by the defendant, Alexander Evan Cohen, who was charged by police in October 2024. District 113 has not been contacted by law enforcement and has no detailed information about the charges pending against the defendant. All the information we have is based on court records and media reports.
On LinkedIn, the defendant lists, under experience, the position of social media coordinator/assistant wrestling coach at Deerfield High School from September 2012 to present. The defendant served as an active volunteer coach for the Deerfield High School Boys Wrestling Team in the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 school years and had successfully passed a criminal background check. Although he did not actively serve in any coaching capacity, he remained listed as a volunteer coach in the parent wrestling handbook for the 2021-22 and 2022-23 school years. After 2022-23, the defendant was not named in any subsequent handbooks, nor did the defendant serve in any coaching capacity since 2019-2020.
District 113 is unaware of any allegations of criminal activity against the defendant during the time the defendant volunteered as an assistant wrestling coach. Please contact our Director of Security, Lane Linder (llinder@dist113.org), if you have any additional information to report.
This is a very concerning situation. Please note that the charges are pending solely against the defendant named above and do not involve any other current or former employees or volunteers.
Thank you for your continued support of student and staff safety. Again, if you have any information relevant to this case, please contact our Director of Security, Lane Linder (llinder@dist113.org). Students who wish to talk to someone or who may be in need of support should contact their school counselor.
As a reminder, you can submit a concern anonymously through the D113 Tip Line. Tips can be submitted by phone or text at (844) 224-1521, or through the web portal.
Sincerely,
Dr. Chala Holland
Superintendent of Schools
