Art with a Heart Summer Job Program Celebrates its 10th Year!  sjp

On July 31st, Art with a Heart completed its 10th summer of its Job Program.  For the last five weeks, over 60 youth from Youth Empowered Society, YO Baltimore, TurnAround, Inc. and Faith Church were engaged on a daily basis in learning job skills while building community and creating marketable works of art.  When asked about the Art with a Heart Job Program experience, one of the participants said, "it is a great program to wake up to every day!"  Art with a Heart looks forward to continuing its workforce efforts with its job program this fall. A volunteer in the program shared,

"I have been a volunteer for the Art with a Heart program at Turn Around this past week (we met again  on Thursday).  I just wanted to drop you an email to let you know how wonderful the program was this week and how much I enjoyed helping out.  CC and Leeare wonderful leaders and were so incredibly patient and kind with the girls, while still holding them to the standards and expectations of the program.  As a professional educator, I was most impressed with both of them.  The entire program and the empowerment it offers the girls is phenomenal.  Kudos to all of you!"

PROGRAMMING
Social Action through a Child's Creative Eyesocial

Scholars in the Freedom Schools summer programs at Baltimore Junior Academy, Pinderhughes Elementary/Middle School, and Tench Tilghman Elementary/Middle School explored the Children's Defense Fund's social action issue of "Ending Child Poverty" through discussion and creating eye-catching works of art.

Scholars crafted compelling slogans for signage which was used during the Children's March on July 15th at the National Day for Social Action in Washington, D.C. Scholars also learned that allocating 2% of the federal budget would uplift 6.6 million children out of poverty. The artwork was then used to create an animated social media piece advocating "#2percent4kids". Be sure to "like" Art with a Heart on Facebook to view this social media piece.

Busy Campers at St. Francis Peace Campbusy

Students in Art with a Heart's classes at the St. Francis Peace Camp learned about peace heroes Diane Nash, Phillip Agnew of Dream Defenders and John Francis, a/k/a "The Planet Walker." To honor these notable individuals, campers made the following: paper mache' shoes inspired by Nash's leadership in the walk across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama; envelope peace banners containing the students' goals and dreams, and owls made of recycled and found objects.

ART OF LEADERSHIP PROGRAMleadership
Art with a Heart welcomes Sarah Abell as the new Director of Leadership  and Engagement. In this role, Sarah will oversee
Art with a Heart's Art of Leadership Program and will work with our dynamic young leaders. As a former teacher and education leader, Sarah is a great fit for our organization and we are happy to have her join our team.

Sarah replaces Megan Goldsmith who was married in May.  Megan recently moved out of state with her husband who accepted a new job.  We wish Megan the best in all of her endeavors and look forward to sharing updates with her as the Program progresses.

After months of hard work and dedication, The Art of Leadership Program will officially begin in August 2015! We are thrilled to welcome the inaugural cohort of 19 leaders from 15 different schools in the Baltimore region.

This summer our aspiring leaders are preparing for the Program by reading The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates by Wes Moore.  During the course of the Program, we will be exploring many of the issues addressed in Mr. Moore's critically acclaimed novel. Wes Moore is a Baltimore native and nationally recognized leader who has authored several books. We are honored and grateful that Mr. Moore will be speaking to our aspiring young leaders during their orientation session in August.
