ART OF LEADERSHIP PROGRAM
leadersLocal Leaders Teach Students about Perseverance

In October, the Art of Leadership students focused on perseverance as a leadership skill.  The students met and heard from two inspiring leaders: Joe Jones, President and CEO of the Center for Urban Families and Antoine Bennett, Founder and CEO of Men of Valuable Action (MOVA).  Joe and Antoine shared their own leadership stories and answered questions posed by our leaders.  Together they explored many issues facing young men and families in West Baltimore.  After hearing from these speakers, a student said, "It made me want to get out there and affect change."
Art of Leadership students, Maddy and Roland present session speaker, Antoine Bennett, with one of several mosaic mirrors the Leadership students created to give as gifts for community leaders who dedicate their time and inspiration to the group.

PROGRAMMING
buildingBuilding Totem Poles at Commodore John Rodgers Elementary/Middle School

Each month, students in Art with a Heart's school programs take a trip "around the world" and highlight a different country and culture through visual art. These paper mache' Native American Totem poles were created in  Art with a Heart's fourth grade class at Commodore John Rodgers Elementary/Middle School to honor North America's indigenous people. These colorful Totem poles will be displayed in the school during the month of November to recognize National Native American Heritage Month

hopeCreating Hope and Inspiration for National Recovery Month

Clients in Art with a Heart classes at Dayspring Programs  created two uplifting community art pieces to commemorate  National Recovery Month . Women illustrated themes of "Visible, Valuable and Vocal."  The larger piece (40"x40") was the intended result but with their enthusiasm for the project, the women continued working and created the smaller piece (16"x16") as well.  Both art pieces now adorn the hall of Dayspring to inspire current and future residents.

happyHappy Birthday to Frederic Remington!

In their October Art with a Heart participants in the Easter Seals Adult Day Program learned about American artist, Frederic Remington. Remington's love of horses inspired participants to sculpt their own clay horse figurines.
pastelsPastels=Fun!

Pre-Kindergarten students in Art with a Heart classes at Kidzstuff had a great time creating big, colorful sunflowers. The children enjoyed learning to use pastels and were very happy to show everyone their finished flowers (and a bumblebee)!

Art with a Heart's Executive Director, Randi Pupkin, facilitated a session at the 5th Biennial Trauma Conference presented by the Family Center at Kennedy Krieger Institute .  Randi's presentation focused on the benefits of visual art on vulnerable populations.  The presentation included an opportunity for workshop attendees to experience an Art with a Heart class. The group created Picasso-inspired, mixed media self-portraits and thoroughly enjoyed tapping into their inner artists.

specialA Special Project for a Special Place

A vibrant and meaningful mosaic was created for  TurnAround, a domestic violence and sexual assault center in Baltimore. The project was initiated and sponsored by Lexi Bernstein, a determined, kind and compassionate thirteen year old . With the help of Art with a Heart, Lexi chose the location for the mosaic, participated in the design process, raised the funds to cover the costs and completed the mosaic with family, friends and the women and girls at TurnAround. We are proud and honored to know and work with Lexi.
