Silence is Not Golden:
Why and How to Communicate During a Crisis
featuring
Bruce Hennes
CEO, Hennes Communications
Today, controversies are tried in the Court of Public Opinion more often than in the Court of Law – and the skill set necessary to manage a crisis is different from the one that put you into leadership where you work.
This short talk focuses on a highly strategic approach to communicating during a wide variety of situations, enabling you to move your message forward or mount a defense against a sudden onslaught from traditional or social media.
“Reputation” is an organization’s largest uninsured asset. Since it takes a lifetime to build a reputation and only a few seconds to destroy one, crisis communications is a necessary skill set for business owners, senior executives, government officials and safety forces. And don’t forget to bring your attorney so he or she can hear why “no comment” should be rarely, if ever, used.
Akron native Bruce Hennes is CEO of Hennes Communications, one of the few firms in N. America focused exclusively on crisis management and crisis communications. The firm handles an average of 180 clients each year and their past and present clients include Avery Dennison, Goodyear, NASA and scores of schools, hospitals, nursing homes government agencies and law firms across the country that find themselves “on trial” in the Court of Public Opinion.
With over 40 years’ experience in communications, Bruce is a longtime member of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association and an associate professor at the Scripps College of Communications at Ohio University. He is also on the faculty of the Ohio State Bar Association’s Leadership Academy.
