Information from the Principal
Happy New Year to our students and parents! While beginning 2021 and our second semester of the school year in a distance learning environment was not how I would like to begin, I am very excited to begin this semester. It is hard to believe that we are halfway through this school year already, and I want to thank each and every one of you for your help and support as we continue on. As I have said before, in addition to providing a quality education to all, another priority is the safety and well-being of our school community. During our distance learning time, we will continue to reach out and check on our students, and our lines of communication are open if you have any questions, concerns, or needs. Thank you for being a part of our school family, and please stay connected with us on social media and our website for updates or other news.

Distance Learning Information
Beginning Monday, January 11, 2021 through Friday, January 15, 2021 all Pickens County Schools will operate in a distance learning model. This means that while some staff members may be working from school, no students will be on campus for instruction. Here are a few items that JMS will utilize during this distance learning time:
- All classes will have live, virtual class meetings on Monday and Wednesday. Teachers will be available to assist and answer questions on Tuesday and Thursday.
- Students and staff will follow the normal school day schedule, meaning that if your student has math as the first class, he/she will have math as the first class and at the same time as a normal school day on campus.
- Students will only have one Connection class per day. The live meet for 1st Connection will be on Monday and the live meet for 2nd Connection will be on Wednesday.
- We understand that distance learning days provide challenges and hardships for some and it may not be possible for students to attend at the normal time. While we hope that as many students can login at the normal time, all teachers will record the live meeting and post a link to that recording on It’s Learning.

It’s Learning is the official Learning Management System for JMS, as well as every other school in Pickens County. All assignments, links, and information for class can be found on this platform. If you or your child have any questions or problems finding information, please contact your child’s teacher. Email addresses can be found at the JMS Webpage at https://jaspermid.pickens.k12.ga.us/
- Assignments are expected to be completed during distance learning as they would be expected during traditional school days. Grades will count so please make sure your student is completing assignments. If you or your child have questions about assignments or grades, please contact your child’s teacher.
- Chat features and instruction links are for instructional purposes. Please do not use either feature for personal communication or inappropriately.

Daily Schedule for Distance Learning |
The schedule below provides the daily schedule with times for students. This schedule has the academic team and homeroom teacher name at the top of the column for each group. Please follow the schedule below your child’s homeroom teacher’s name to follow their schedule and times. Please note again that live, instructional meetings will take place on Monday and Wednesday. Links to those meetings will be available on It’s Learning under each class. Teachers will be available on Tuesday and Thursday during class time to assist students and provide help, remediation, or enrichment. Friday will be a flexible day used to reach out to staff members, have meetings, or assist students based on Monday through Thursday work.

Information and Resources
Parents are called on to be more involved than ever before as schools are faced with the challenge of providing learning opportunities for all students at a distance. How do we best help our kids make the most of these distance learning experiences?
Understand the expectation for distance learning. Be familiar with the schedule for online distance learning set by your child’s school.
Determine what type of activities work best for your child. For example, does your child work better with synchronous activities where they respond to a live instructor or in-person sitting one-on-one with you? Know when your child may need more guidance from a parent.
- Encourage movement. Kids need to move their bodies frequently throughout the day. Allow time for exercise before your child is expected to focus on a distance learning task.
- Reduce distractions when your child is completing schoolwork. This includes noise as well as visual clutter. A designated workspace that is comfortable for your child will be helpful.
- Adjust your schedule as needed. If your child is frustrated, make a change in your schedule to allow for a break and then revisit the task. Some learning activities will be easier to move through than others. Consider working with your child on those activities or subjects that are more difficult during the times of day when your child is most alert and engaged.
- Use a checklist for focus. For some children who really struggle with focusing, a basic visual checklist of tasks needed for a particular activity will be helpful. The child would check off each task with you as it is completed and receive some positive praise or another reward when finished.
- Provide immediate positive feedback. Each time your child completes distance learning instruction, provide immediate and positive feedback! Something as simple as putting a checkmark, star, or sticker on the work assignment can go a long way in helping to motivate your child.
- With creative thinking and effort by teachers and families as partners, children will continue to build their knowledge and skills, as well as build confidence and a love for learning.
