Boston Globe Article: In Vt., a Jewish community rises like the mountains
STOWE, Vt. - Rabbi David B. Fainsilber is clucking like a chicken. Kids are cracking up, adults can't help smiling. His sermon this Shabbat is a riff on an old Hasidic story about a prince who infuriated his father at mealtimes by sitting under the table, pretending to be a chicken.
Then a wise teacher crawled under the table and clucked to the child in greeting. The prince, he suggested, could be a boy and still hold onto his inner chicken.
"The best teachers come to students, rather than waiting for children to come to them," Fainsilber concludes. And, he adds, "We can still be elementary school teachers, Vermonters, skiers, farmers, artists, business people, while also being Jewish."

Disconnected from students and teachers, he believes he is destined to play Holden Caulfield, the main character of The Catcher in the Rye and has adapted the book as a play. After a series of increasingly hostile altercations with the boys at school Jamie runs away to search for J.D. Salinger. On his way he picks up Deedee Gorlin, a quirky townie. Their odyssey to find Salinger becomes a journey of sexual awakening, the discovery of love and of the meaning of one's life. Run Time: 1 hr. 37 min.
