Updates - TEP Project

A win for neighborhoods and Tucson

Two recent victories for Tucsonans with regard to the TEP project: First, thanks to the leadership of Dan Dempsey, the Governor's Regulatory Review Council (GRRC) voted unanimously to nullify the Arizona Corporation Commission's policy that TEP has been saying prevents it from undergrounding the Midtown Reliability Project. TEP now has no argument that Tucson cannot require undergrounding because ACC and state policy forbids it.

Secondly, the Steering Committee of the Undergrounding Coalition proposed amendments to add the aesthetic appearance of our streetscapes and neighborhoods as a consideration in the city's policymaking and decisions. Those amendments are now part of Plan Tucson 2025 in both the transportation and land-use sections of the Plan. Voters will have the opportunity to decide on the plan in the November 4 special election.

(excerpted Tucson Neighborhood Undergrounding Coalition updates)

MESSAGE BOARD & MITIGATION

Sample plans for the message board above, Fabricator will be Jason. You may see his work just southeast of the Campbell Frontage Road and Lester---ramada and benches

VISUAL BARRIER MEETING with Banner officials will be on June 27th in the morning at Warren and Lester. If you would like to attend let Colleen know

cnichols17@cox.net

The Message Board Update

Jason Butler, fabricator, reports that "the piece is built, starting rust patina." Thank you Banner and the neighbors who have volunteered to monitor the board.

Visual barrier between hospital and neighborhood

Neighbors have reported ER patients who leave the hospital and stumble into our area, often seeking help or entering properties without permission, leaving hospital paraphernalia throughout the neighborhood. At Lester and Warren, there is an open-space view of the ER doors. JPNA and Banner are discussing ways to aesthetically block that view without limiting access for Banner and surrounding neighbors who use the health trail and basin area. Thank you, Banner for your willingness to address this problem.

Jefferson Park in process of righting a wrong!

Did you know your neighborhood has some history of which we are not proud? In 1926 the CC&R's (Conditions, Covenants and Restrictions) were created to provide rules for residing in the neighborhood. Present day laws do not allow racial profiling. Yes, these CC&R's are very old, and very difficult to erase, but we think it's important to have them redacted. We thank the JPNA board members who are working through this process. It is complicated! See CC&R's at:http://www.jeffersonpark.info/ccr-1926.html

Jefferson Park Membership Dues to Increase

Well, we guess it had to happen. JPNA Board voted to raise its membership dues from $15 to $20 per year. Little Free libraries, message boards, neighborhood entry signs, street signs, e-news,traffic mitigation, website dues, etc. are all funded by your donations and dues.

PS You do not need to be a member to attend meetings or vote at the annual meetings. Dues are voluntary and are greatly appreciated!

Consider donating to the neighborhood non-profit,

Friends of Jefferson Park, Inc., a 501c3 organization. Find out how to pay your dues to the Jefferson Park Neighborhood Association.

Press the Donate Button to go to the JPNA website where you can access a link to donate or get a copy of the dues form.

LIFE ON EDISON - First step to Repaving-Water Main

1. THE WORK ON EDISON’s water main will consist of a new water main, new service lines and meters for the residents along this stretch. If a resident has special needs, contact Anthony Muniz at 520-975-3130.

2.SHUT DOWN OF SERVICE - The contractor will place a reminder the day before the shutdown of service will commence. It will be during the day, that will normally occur 10am to 3pm.”

Taffic Circle Update

AND NOW THE FIX! JPNA met with AZ Arts Foundation and are in contact with Department of Transportation about the issue. The preliminary plan is for the original artist to work with the neighborhood to create a new piece that reflects the significance of the historic intersection - the first homestead and the homes of Annie Lester, the German immigrant who settled the area, named our streets, built several homes and who brought a school to the neighborhood.

Ward 6 Recycling Moving

The Ward 6 Recycling Center is scheduled to close by the end of summer due to a new development. The Environmental Services Department has proposed a new site located on Randolph Way to the East of the City's surplus property warehouse and South of Hi Corbett Field.

Ways to clean up

LOTS OF WAYS TO RECYCLE AND DONATE TO CHARITIES

BUY NOTHING FACEBOOK PAGE - Post your items on the Buy Nothing Facebook page and share with others.

REALLY, REALLY FREE MARKET at Himmel Park near the tennis courts on the third Saturday of every month. Winter hours 9 -11, Summer 8 - 1.

BRINGING OUT THE BEST THRIFT SHOP on Speedway. Beyond what they can sell, they recycle everything: rags, unusable clothing, old shoes, appliances, etc.  They shred clothing that is no longer wearable and use it as stuffing in dog and cat beds for rescue groups.

TUCSON REPAIR CAFE - check with them first through their Facebook page, but they often accept electronics and appliances, small household items, etc, that can be repaired or be taken apart to use for parts.

SUBURBAN MINERS located one block west of Alvernon. They repurpose and recycle all kinds of electronic equipment. They also accept other household items and have a "Free Store" open to the public. Suburban Miners is located about a mile away on Blacklidge just a block off Alvernon.

ELECTRONICS RECYCLING: SWS Computers on Speedway, just west of Alvernon quite near us, recycles nearly anything electronic for free.

A few of the many, many wonderful charities where you can make donations:

A quote from a neighbor in the March report "Flight arrived directly from the north over the 17-1800 blocks of Jeff Park. Completely out of the agreed upon flight corridor. And- what is the deal with the volume of these helicopters? They used to be dramatically quieter. I’ve been living here since 1994, and it’s NEVER been like it’s been the past 6-9 months."
