‘Juuling’: The most widespread phenomenon you’ve never heard of

One of the biggest topics right now in high school parent newsletters everywhere is the Juul. It’s a popular e-cigarette system that looks a lot like a USB flash drive—you may have seen one in your teens room, figuring it contained their homework . Based on Twitter and Instagram posts with the hashtag #doit4juul, students are “juuling” wherever, whenever—in school bathrooms, in libraries and under their desks in class. They’re getting away with it because the device is discreet, the “cloud” can be hidden in a sleeve, and the vapor smells sweet and fruity, unlike cigarette smoke. Among teens, e-cigarettes are more popular than traditional cigarettes , and the Juul brand is currently king.

The Juul consists of a long, slim vaporizer and disposable “pods” of nicotine juice. The pods come in flavors such as mango, creme brulee and cucumber. Some call the Juul the “iPhone of vapes” because of its sleek and minimalistic design. It charges on a laptop or other USB port.
What is the Upriver Youth SAFE HOMES Network?
Part of the national SAFE HOMES initiative, the Upriver Youth SAFE HOMES Network encourages communication and positive peer pressure among parents to stop teenage alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, and to protect our children from being exposed to unsafe conditions when they socialize with their peers.
Parents who take the SAFE HOMES pledge agree not to allow minors to use alcohol, tobacco and other drugs in their homes or on their property. SAFE HOMES parents can choose to be listed in a directory so you can communicate with other parents to verify activities and ensure they plan to uphold the pledge while your child is in their home.
In short, it’s a safety net for our kids that we, the parents, create. And it just takes a few simple actions on our part.   Register here: Safe Homes Registration
