On Monday, April 20 at 8:20 p.m., there was a familiar glow coming from Kings Stadium. As a part of the #BetheLight initiative, the stadium lights glowed for 20 minutes to honor of the Kings High School Class of 2020.

Big News from KHS Art Department
For the first time in Kings High School history, we have not one, but TWO STUDENTS place at the National level in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards earning THREE NATIONAL MEDALS! This means these young artists are among the top 1% in the Nation!

Congratulations to Halle West and Yvonne Arnett , both juniors, whose artwork was selected to be a part of a rotating exhibit throughout the Nation for the next two years.

Halle West's mixed media piece " I Don't Feel Safe Anymore " is about school shootings and the fear students face today. This received a National Gold Medal.

Her second work entitled " Young at Heart " is a layered pen portrait of an older man and a baby. The work is interactive allowing the viewer to use 3D glasses to see both portraits. This piece received a National Silver Medal.

Yvonne Arnett's acrylic painting is a portrait of a young man entitled " Losing Control "  and received a National Silver Medal.

Almost 3,000 teens across the country learned that they had been recognized with a National Medal in the 2020 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards—the most prestigious honor an American teen can receive for their creative work.

Normally, the winners are invited to the National Awards Ceremony in New York City but the ceremony has been postponed due to Coronavirus.

Many congratulations to Halle and Yvonne on this prestigious honor!

Look for the Helpers
Since Ohio Governor, Mike DeWine closed schools in March, there have been people all over the state helping to make products to keep our frontline workers safe. Kings Junior High School teacher, Sara Nicholls is one of those helpers! She has been busy creating products to help our healthcare workers keep their masks on during their long shifts.

Using her 3-D printer, she is creating ear guards to help take pressure off health care worker's ears from wearing masks all day. She began printing the ear guards after a nurse friend of hers at Mr. Carmel St. Ann's Hospital requested 100 of them. She has also supplied the ear guards to the VA Hospital in Cincinnati. She said each guard takes 7 minutes to print. She and some of her other Project Lead the Way teachers just sent 1,500 of the guards to Kettering Hospital.

She has also used her 3-D printer to make the apparatus that holds the 3M square filters.(see below) and the apparatus that holds a face shield. Nicholls said that this apparatus uses a plastic binder sheet or an old school overhead projecter plastic sheet. The plastic sheets can be removed and thrown away and replaced with a clean one.

Great work, Mrs. Nicholls! You are #KingsStrong!
Local Author Meets JFB Third Graders Virtually
The third grade students in Robyn and Anna Bersani's classes at J.F. Burns Elementary had a special guest in their virtual classroom this week! Local author and Landen resident, William Schroeder met students to talk about his book, Smallmouth Sonny of Bass Island Bar .

The students were assigned to read/watch the book on Schroeder's YouTube link and write questions to ask the author during his visit. The story is about a smallmouth bass that lost his way in the Little Miami River until he meets two Blue Heron's who help him find his way home while meeting many friends along the way.

Author Schroeder gifted a signed book for each student! A special thank you to Mr. Schroeder for taking the time to visit the class!
Ohio COVID Care Line
This week,  Governor Mike DeWine   announced that a new toll-free emotional support call service, the COVID CareLine, has been created by the Ohio Dept of Mental Health and Addiction. It will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., 7 days/week. (Calls after those hours will roll over to the national suicide hotline.)

Trained responders will be on the line to support and assist all Ohioans who are struggling with the impacts of the pandemic. This COVID CareLine can be reached at 800-720-9616.

All calls are handled by licensed mental health counselors & social workers and are completely confidential. They can listen, help with some screenings, and connect callers to local resources in their communities they may need.

Be Counted Ohio
The 2020 Census is well underway. In Ohio, the response has been 54%. Ohio's statewide response rate is 4% higher than the national average, but the goal is obviously 100%.

The Census is counted once every decade. It is important that every Ohioan is counted so our state receives the appropriate amount of federal funding that helps support our communities, schools, public safety resources, and improve our roads.

The U.S. Census Bureau is hiring for a variety of temporary jobs. Pay rates in Ohio range from $14.00 to $23.50 per hour.
