Tina Barton, LOXXV
Clerk at City of Rochester Hills
This last year I spent an amazing nine months with approximately 50 professionals from Oakland County. I was honored to be a participant in Leadership Oakland XXV.

What is Leadership Oakland (LO)? The LO program begins in September with a high-impact three-day retreat, and ends in June with a graduation ceremony. Each month, class members participate in a day-long session with a different regional focus-from education, government and the justice system to health and human services and race and ethnic diversity. Each in-depth session is led by subject experts, and includes a mix of lectures, activities and observation.
Leadership Oakland expanded my knowledge of topics such as: healthcare, diversity in the work place, the justice system, alternative schools, non-profits, and arts and culture. Our class heard speakers on topics such as environmental regulation, crimes committed against children, and Medical Main Street. We watched a surgery at Beaumont Hospital and were able to sit in on a court session. We heard from the Chief of General Crimes Unit, US Attorney's Office, as well as the US Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan.
I finished my year with Leadership Oakland as a better public servant. I am proud to live and work in Oakland County. Thank you to Leadership Oakland and their amazing team for investing in me. As a graduate of Leadership Oakland XXV, I am even more prepared to serve the residents of Oakland County. I will continue to push myself personally and professionally as your next County Clerk. John F. Kennedy said, "Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other." I will continue to learn more in order to lead better.

The learning and growth promoted by the program fostered changes for me personally and professionally, and the overall experience of the incredible networking that is possible in LO events, meetings and groups surpasses any other organization that I have joined.

A Message from the Director
How Will You Lead?

It is that time of year again. The time when we especially open our hearts to the needs of others, open our homes to friends and families, and, hopefully, open our minds to new possibilities and ways of thinking. Our world needs good leaders on the global and national levels, locally in our communities, and, importantly, in our homes. We need leaders like you.

Thanks for your generosity at the Together We CAN! gathering held last week. Baldwin Center is this year's distribution site for your donations.

Please remember to pay your alumni dues if you have not yet done so. The tax advantage of doing it before the end of the fiscal year is a plus.

I have enjoyed my brief return serving as the LO Executive Director and am happy to share that an announcement about the next ED should come soon after the first of the new year. The search committee and board are close to finalizing this. I am ready to start my retirement and I know you will be eager to get involved and show extra support for LO and the new Executive Director. It should make for a happy new year all around!

Best wishes to you and your family and dear ones this season and into 2016. Be the leader you wish to see in the world!

Warmest regards,

Chris Scharrer
Executive Director
Leadership Oakland
Submit your LO Alumni Association dues by Dec 31 and receive the benefit on your 2015 taxes!
There's no time like the present to pay your LOAA dues for the 2016 year or to make a donation to Jr. LO. Thanks to Tim Wynman, LOXXIII,  for providing matching donations  up to $1,500.
Your dues and donations help us to continue our mission to develop a network of diverse and influential leaders by exposing them to regional resources and issues, and challenging them to reach their full personal, professional and public leadership potentials.
Together We Can!..and we did!

"Together We CAN!" was a huge success thanks to more than 13 LO classes that were represented at the Townsend's Corner Bar on December 9. In addition to being a holiday mixer it was a chance to donate can goods and money to support the Balwin Center in Pontiac. So who won the friendly competition?
LOXXVI. They have proclaimed themselves "the best class...period!"
Special thank you to everyone who supported the event, especially Justin
Wellman LOXXVI who transported the donations over to Baldwin Center!

Health & Envirnoment Session
December 9 was our third session for our LOXXVI class. The session's objective was to provide an overview of health and environmental issues, challenges and resources. Participants also had an opportunity for personal and professional involvement in supporting wellness and the future of our environment.
"Several points jumped out for me and caused me to think about them again. For example: learning how natural gas is stored underground was really interesting; the federal regulations and lack of regulations with regard to the disposal of chemical waste is concerning; and the medical advancements and technology available and in use at Beaumont is incredible!"
