Urgent Action Needed:
Ask the Governor to Sign the Democracy Act

american-flag-wavy.jpg Yesterday, the Democracy Act, S50/A4613, was passed by the full Senate and now waits on Governor Christie's desk to be signed into law.

Call the Governor right now at 609-292-6000 and ask that he sign the Democracy Act into law.
In a statement about the legislation, Senator Gill said, "Fifty years ago, President Johnson signed into law the Voting Rights Act, which Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. called 'a great step forward in removing all the remaining obstacles to the right to vote.' Today, we demonstrated our commitment to continuing the legacy of those leaders and protecting voter's rights. This bill is a long overdue update to New Jersey's voting laws and a 'great step forward' to expand opportunities for people to participate in the process and exercise their most fundamental constitutional right."
This groundbreaking legislation modernizes and improves New Jersey's outdated voting laws, ultimately making the ballot box more accessible. This legislation, which has been amended since our last action alert, includes provisions that will:
  • Establish in-person early voting in our state, opening up access to polling places prior to Election Day;
  • Allow voters to complete and submit voter registration forms online;
  • And institute automatic registration, similar to Oregon's new law, that will register New Jersey's voters automatically (unless they opt out) when they apply for drivers licenses/non-driving identification at the MVC.
The legislation no longer includes same day voter registration, but still includes other changes that will improve our voting system including pre-registration of voters that are 17, printing election material in more languages, expanding vote by mail, and ensuring access for people with disabilities. Increasing voter turnout and modernizing outdated election laws are issues of the highest priority for the League of Women Voters of New Jersey and we know our members and supporters voices carry great weight on voting issues. We need your help!

Please call Governor Christie's office right now at 609-292-6000 and say that as a member/supporter of the League of Women Voters of New Jersey you are asking that he sign the Democracy Act into law.

The nonpartisan League of Women Voters of New Jersey always puts voters first, and this legislation will help increase voter turnout and make the ballot box more accessible. Similar voting laws have been passed and enacted in other states with overwhelming bipartisan support. Please ask Governor Christie to sign this legislation on behalf of New Jersey's voters. Thank you for taking action.
