From School Leadership

November 9, 2023

Dear Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School Community:

We hope that you have had a great week! Adults and children had a lot of fun "under the lights" at the PTO sponsored Family Fun and Fitness Night on Thursday. Thanks to Sr. Watkins for helping engage us in fun activities!

Last Friday, our classroom teachers focused on small group literacy/biliteracy instruction. As we have mentioned, we are implementing a new language arts series this year which aligns with other content areas; many of our teachers piloted this curriculum last year. The series is called Benchmark Adelante, and we are using Advance in English instruction, also. Click here to learn more about this curricular resource.

We have had a lot of classes utilizing our outdoor spaces for learning. On Tuesday, our second grade students ventured to Westwood Nature Center.

Thank you for entrusting us with your children and for your collaboration to help them and all their classmates have a great experience at school. Have a great week, keep reading, and see you soon!

P.S. We are looking for several Amity Intern host families for the Spring. Please see below for more information about this great opportunity.

Mayor for a Day Essay Contests

The League of Minnesota Cities is once again encouraging our state’s 4th, 5th, and 6th graders to share ideas about how they would make cities better through submitting essays in the League’s “Mayor for a Day” essay contest. This year’s prompt is, “What would you do if you were mayor for a day?”

Contest information can be found at lmc.org/mayorforaday. Three winning students will be chosen from among submitted entries. Each winning student will receive $100 and will have their essay published in a future issue of Minnesota Cities magazine.  The deadline for submissions is Dec. 12.

New ParkTV channels for SLP board meetings and other programming

ParkTV is updating its Comcast cable channels to include more high definition (HD) channels, while still maintaining standard definition (SD) viewing options. St. Louis Park Public Schools programming, including concerts, plays, school board meetings and sports, can now be viewed on HD Ch. 859 and SD Ch. 16. View the airing schedule.

Additionally, you can watch school board meetings and other videos on our Youtube channel.

SLP Staff Directory

We’re pleased to announce that the new searchable online staff directory is now available to the public. You can search the directory by name, department, location, and position. For example, search keywords such as principal, nurse, or counselor. View the staff directory.

St. Louis Park Celebrates National Community Education Day on November 9, 2023!

We’re celebrating with a special gift; 20 percent off registration for Youth and Adult class/activity - good for 11/9 only.

November is Native American Heritage Month

St. Louis Park Public Schools exist on the land of the Dakota and Ojibwe peoples. We acknowledge the Dakota and Ojibwe community, their elders both past and present, as well as future generations. We acknowledge that our school district was founded upon exclusions and erasures of many Indigenous Peoples, including those on whose land our school district is located. We commit to dismantling the ongoing legacies of colonial power and the district’s desire to support the ongoing work of local Indigenous communities to thrive in our schools. Especially this month, we celebrate Native American Heritage Month and honor the Indigenous students and families we serve in St. Louis Park Public Schools.

Spring Amity Host Families Needed

Our children benefit each day from the assistance of eight Amity interns from Spanish speaking countries in our PSI classrooms! Each semester, our school depends on 8 families willing and able to host these dedicated interns. We are in need of a few more PSI host families for spring semester (mid-January to mid-June). We are hoping to get these families signed up in the next few weeks and we thank every family for considering how they can support this program, whether it is fundraising during leer-a-tón or hosting an intern this spring.

Not only is hosting an Amity a huge service to the PSI community, but it is a really wonderful and unique experience that can benefit your whole family. One of the most exciting things we hear is the joy of hearing your child speaking Spanish in their day to day lives with the Amity in your home.

Final Call for Leer-A-Tón Submissions

This is the final week to get your leer-a-tón submissions turned back in to school. We will be announcing the winners soon! And if you haven’t had a chance to submit your donations, you can do that at either of these links - Paypal or GiveMN. We have raised almost $21,000 of our $25,000 goal. Let’s see if we can reach our goal!

Give To The Max Day

The PSI PTO is participating in Give to the Max Day 2023, Minnesota's state-wide giving holiday!

Give to the Max raises millions each year for Minnesota nonprofits and schools and offers organizations like the PTO the chance to win additional grants from a prize pool of more than $100,000. Every donation of $5 or more, now through Give to the Max Day, Nov. 16th, enters the PSI PTO in these drawings.

We recognize that many families gave to the Leer-a-tón recently, for which we are so appreciative. If you missed donating to Leer-a-tón or find your family in a position to give again, you could help us win additional grant money!

Last year during Give to the Max the PTO raised $1,500 from 30 donors. This year, we have a goal to raise $2,000. You can give to PSI PTO online by visiting the PSI PTO GiveMN page. Thank you for any support you can give!

Amity Introductions - Meet Andrés

My name is Juan Andrés Ruiz Garzón and I am a 23-year old Colombian guy who loves to learn, meet people, and teach. I come from Bogotá D.C., a big, crowded, chaotic, but charming, and terrific city. There, I was studying the last semester of a Bachelor degree in Bilingual Education - English & Spanish at Institución Universitaria Colombo Americana - ÚNICA. Meanwhile, I was working at the Centro Colombo Americano as a Junior Teacher. I used to spend most of my time studying, working, and sharing time with my family and my friends.

I come from a loving family who, during all my lifetime, have taught me lots of values that have helped me thrive and succeed in different aspects of life. My mother is a housewife with the biggest, and sweetest heart in the world; my father is a taxi driver who, with his love and dedication to our family, has teamed-up with my mom to provide, care, and build an exemplary home. I am the second of four brothers. My oldest brother is currently living and studying in Australia, my younger brother is in tenth grade at school, and my youngest brother passed away five years ago.

I am fascinated to be in the United States. This is my first time in this country, and I couldn’t be happier that I was chosen to be in Minnesota! It has lots of forested lands and nature, over 10.000 lakes(!), and guess what...one of the best education systems in the United States. I am coming to learn, share, and grow as a teacher and as a person. I want to become more culturally aware, and to give the PSI community a bit of the Bogotan, and Colombian culture.

I would like to add that I am into sports, I like to try any new sport, and I love going to the gym. I also like social & emotional skills, critical thinking and philosophy. What a combination, eh? Then, I love any kind of plan that collects at least one of the aforementioned topics, for instance, cinema, theater plays, jogging, attending sport events, food crawling among many others.
