January 9, 2025
Dear Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School Community:
¡Feliz año, PSI families! We missed you all and are so happy to be back in community! Walking the halls and being in classrooms, you can hear students talking about how excited they are to be back in the building and with their friends again. We have also seen staff and students doing an amazing job of practicing their routines and getting back into the swing of things.
Many exciting things are happening this new year. Marie Olofsdotter is back again for our annual PTO-sponsored second grade proyecto de máscaras (mask project), and the fourth graders had a field trip come to us from the Bakken Museum yesterday. There are many fun and interesting things to come!
January also marks the start of our winter testing session. Students in all grades will be participating in FastBridge testing and students in grades 2-5 will be participating in mid-year MAP testing in reading and math in English. This data is part of a portfolio of information that we use to guide our instruction to help support your children. You can find more information about testing on the SLP testing website here.
We look forward to partnering with you in your child’s learning and development this year!
In partnership,
Corey Maslowski, Principal
Megan Paulis de Rangel, Assistant Principal

In this section, we are featuring some of our amazing PSI Staff so the community can get to know every adult in the building as we work together to support each student at PSI!
This week we want to highlight two PSI staff members. María Carazo and Rosa Sala-Healey both teach Kindergarten here at PSI. We are so happy to have them here!

A Note on Lice from the School Nurse
Because lice is common in childhood, it is important to check your children’s hair for head lice on a regular basis.
Head lice are tiny insects that make their home in human hair. Anyone can get lice and it is fairly common in school-age children. They are not a sign of poor hygiene and lice are not known to spread infectious disease.
Most commonly, head lice are spread by direct head-to-head contact with someone who has head lice. Lice crawl; they do not jump or fly. They may also be spread by sharing personal items such as combs, brushes, other hair-care items, towels, pillows, hats, and other head coverings. Dogs, cats, and other pets do not spread head lice.
In general, our school practice includes the following:
- When a child is identified with an active head lice infestation at school parents will be notified. Your child can remain at school and should be treated before returning to school.
- Your child’s health information will be kept private.
- Treatment should begin at home, as soon as possible once you are aware that your child has lice.
- Check everyone at home if one person in the home has head lice. Health Office staff can help by checking siblings at school upon request.
- Mass lice screenings at school are not performed.
- Please let the health office know if your child has lice.
Resources
Minnesota Department of Health Lice Information:
Contact your child’s healthcare provider if home treatments are not effective. If you do not have a healthcare provider, contact the school health office for resources. Local pharmacies carry over-the-counter lice removal kits. Approximate prices range from $10-$35. To find professional organizations, search google for “Lice Removal Near Me.” These services can be quite expensive. Ask if they have a sliding scale fee based on income.

Based on community feedback, we are adding a new section to La Prensa, Compartiendo Cultura (sharing culture). This section will highlight the many ways that we help students bring to life our SLP public schools’ vision statement, in becoming their best selves as globally minded contributors to society.
In this issue, check out our 2nd grade students making masks in collaboration with our resident artist that has specialized in Italian Theater Masks. Marie Olofsdotter shared that masks are a common theme amongst many cultures. Check out the pictures below to see two finished examples of Panamanian masks created by our Kinder teacher, Srta. Joyner.

Make Your Voice Heard: Take the Community Survey on the Strategic Plan
St. Louis Park Public Schools sees, inspires and empowers each learner to live their brilliance. As our world continues to evolve, our roadmap to enhance the lives of our students, staff and community members needs to evolve too.
That is why the district has decided to embark on a redesign of the strategic plan. A strategic plan is a comprehensive framework that outlines an organization’s long-term vision, mission, and goals, serving as a roadmap to guide decision-making and resource allocation.
In addition to hearing from staff, we want to hear from community members to help guide our work and ensure that each voice has a chance to be heard. Your voice is important and we want to hear from you!
