April 27, 2023

Dear Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School Community:

I hope that you and your family are doing well! Our fifth grade students spent last Friday at the Middle School for a "Jump Start" to learn about the building, meet others, open lockers, look at schedules, and so much more; it was a great opportunity! Our orchestra students did a great job on Monday evening sharing their talents and hard work at the district-wide orchestra concert! Our kindergarten students had fun at Gale Woods Farm on Tuesday.

We will host a virtual Amity Intern informational session next Tuesday, May 2nd, from 6:30-7:30 pm at this link. This year, we are hosting eight amazing interns who work with our teachers daily, to support your children in all aspects of their education. Please join us to learn more about our PTO-sponsored Amity Intern program. There are many fun opportunities to support and connect with this amazing program.

Have a great week, keep reading, and see you soon!

Elders' Wisdom, Children's Song Celebration

The fourth grade Elders’ Wisdom, Children’s Song community celebration is soon! The fourth graders have been working with Sr. Davis, Sr. Larson, and Sra. Wieber to put the finishing touches on their songs. They are excited to share their learning with the PSI community.

Sra. Ruff's class will be honoring Sr. Luis Ocampo, a SLP soccer coach whose children attended PSI in the early years. Sra. Giraldo's class will be honoring Sr. Richard Freeman, a Vietnam veteran from our community. Sra. Gusmán's class will be honoring Sra. Elizabeth Hoy Linares, one of PSI’s very first teachers.

Families are invited to join us as the fourth graders honor these elders in a

community celebration on Monday, May 8, at 6:30 p.m. at the SLP Middle School.

Fourth grade students should arrive at the Middle School at 6:00 p.m. for a short practice before the performance.

Volunteers needed! We need a few volunteers to help with the mini rehearsal when students arrive at 6:00.  Contact Sra. Wieber at wieber.kimberly@slpschools.org to volunteer.

Idle-Free SLP Campaign

Happy spring! As you pick up and drop off your kids this year from schools or parks, you may notice some “Idle-Free SLP” signs. That’s because the City of St. Louis Park, in collaboration with Park Nicollet, launched a student-driven idling reduction campaign for cleaner air and healthier lungs. Idling, or running the engine while parked, can produce more tailpipe emissions per minute than driving and has been linked to asthma symptoms, heart and lung disease, cognitive issues, and premature death. Children are even more vulnerable to air pollution than adults because they breathe more air per pound of body weight and their respiratory systems are not yet fully developed. This makes idling near schools – one of the most common idling scenarios as parents wait to pick up their children – especially dangerous. Learn more and get involved by checking out the city website.

Carnaval is an important part of Hispanic culture, long celebrated throughout history with parades, colorful clothing, and people dancing in the streets to music. As a Spanish Immersion school, we want to highlight cultural traditions such as Carnaval with our students and families and celebrate our diversity.

The festivities will be on PSI’s back lawn and bus lot. Join for music, dancing, games, food trucks, inflatables, and lots of fun. Don't miss the Carnaval parade at 1:30!

Parent volunteers are critical – please consider working a shift at Carnaval. Sign up today!
