Dear Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School Community:
It was great to see so many people at our PTO-sponsored Pizza and Movie Night! It was also wonderful to connect with many of you! You are invited to a virtual chat with the principals from 3:45-4:45 on Monday, April 28. We will share information regarding next year's elementary schedule changes at 4:00, and the rest of the time will be an opportunity to connect and learn with and from each other. Feel free to drop in at any time! We will share the link in next week's La Prensa.
Our third, fourth and fifth graders took the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA's) in reading yesterday and today. They will take the Math MCA next Wednesday and Thursday. The results will be shared with families in the fall.

In this section, we are featuring some of our amazing PSI Staff so the community can get to know every adult in the building as we work together to support each student at PSI!
This week we want to highlight a few of our PSI staff members. Sra. Probst and Sra. Ninnemann are two of our long time staff here. Sra. Probst is our Elementary Student Support Coordinator, and Sra. Ninnemann is the front office Administrative Assistant. We are so happy to have them here!

Elders' Wisdom, Children's Song: April 28
The fourth grade Elders’ Wisdom, Children’s Song community celebration is soon! The fourth graders have been working with Sr. Davis and Sra. Wieber to put the finishing touches on their songs. They are excited to share their learning with the PSI community.
Sra. Ruff's class will be honoring Sr. Ram Etwarroo, an immigrant from Guyana who works at PSI. Sra. Giraldo's class will be honoring Sr. Dan Jensen, a Vietnam veteran from our community. Srta. Casey's class will be honoring Sra. Gayle Knutson, a local filmmaker who happens to be Srta. Casey’s mom!
Families are invited to join us as the fourth graders honor these elders in a
community celebration on Monday, April 28, at 6:30 p.m. at the SLP Middle School.
Fourth grade students should arrive at the Middle School at 6:00 p.m. for a short practice before the performance.
Volunteers needed! We need a few volunteers to help with the mini rehearsal when students arrive at 6:00 and also with the small reception after the celebration. Contact Sra. Wieber at wieber.kimberly@slpschools.org to volunteer.

Our young gardeners have been hard at work this spring, growing a variety of seedlings indoors, and now it’s time to share them with you! Join us for our First Annual PSI PTO Community Garden Plant Sale on Friday, May 9, from 2:15-4:00 PM after school.
We’ll have a beautiful selection of plants, including annual and perennial flowers, vegetables, and herbs—perfect for your garden or patio!
This donation-based fundraiser in partnership with our PTO will help sustain the PSI Community Garden for years to come. Stop by to pick up some plants while supporting a greener future for our school!

A Note from the School Nurse on Lice
Because lice is common in childhood, it is important to check your children’s hair for head lice on a regular basis.
Head lice are tiny insects that make their home in human hair. Anyone can get lice and it is fairly common in school-age children. They are not a sign of poor hygiene and lice are not known to spread infectious disease.
Most commonly, head lice are spread by direct head-to-head contact with someone who has head lice. Lice crawl; they do not jump or fly. They may also be spread by sharing personal items such as combs, brushes, other hair-care items, towels, pillows, hats, and other head coverings. Dogs, cats, and other pets do not spread head lice.
In general, our school practice includes the following:
- When a child is identified with an active head lice infestation at school parents will be notified. Your child can remain at school and should be treated before returning to school.
- Your child’s health information will be kept private.
- Treatment should begin at home, as soon as possible once you are aware that your child has lice.
- Check everyone at home if one person in the home has head lice. Health Office staff can help by checking siblings at school upon request.
- Mass lice screenings at school are not performed.
- Please let the health office know if your child has lice.

Contact your child’s healthcare provider if home treatments are not effective. If you do not have a healthcare provider, contact the school health office for resources. Local pharmacies carry over-the-counter lice removal kits. Approximate prices range from $10-$35. To find professional organizations, search google for “Lice Removal Near Me.” These services can be quite expensive. Ask if they have a sliding scale fee based on income.

In this issue, we want to highlight a project our kindergartners have been working on. Kinder students have been co-teaching in music class! Families have shared their student's special song and then every Kinder student has the chance to co teach their song and share why it is special.
This week in Sra. Aparicio's class, a student co-taught the song "Ale Ale" and talked about why he loved his song (it says his name!). The class then discussed what "Latino" means and noticed all the different flags in the music video. With a map of Latin American countries up on the screen, the student called on classmates raising their hands to share the names of countries they recognized. They wrapped up the lesson with a fun dance-along video!
