Dear Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School Community:
Thank you to our community for helping celebrate our amazing staff members this week! We are grateful for the treats and for your continued support.
Our first graders presented their "Drum Calls" and songs this morning; please see below for more information and pictures. The project is a cross-disciplinary collaboration happening in classrooms and in music. What a wonderful way to start the day!
This evening, we have our rescheduled Elders' Wisdom Children's Song presentation at PSI in the gymnasium. Our students are so excited to share what they have learned from the elders! This is also a cross-discipline project in collaboration with the classroom, music, and talent development. It is always one of the most amazing nights of the school year!
Our fifth graders went to Westwood Nature Center, and it sounds like it was a great experience; we look forward to celebrating our fifth graders and their contributions to our community as they transition to the Middle School in a few weeks!
As a reminder, our PTO-sponsored Carnaval will be next Saturday, May 17 from 12:00 until 2:30 at PSI. Please join us, and check out the lost and found while you're here!

Elders' Wisdom, Children’s Song- Tonight
We are excited to announce that Elders' Wisdom, Children's Song has been rescheduled for Thursday, May 8 at 6:30pm in the PSI Gymnasium. Fourth grade students should arrive at 6:15 pm and should go directly to their classrooms.
A quick reminder that parking will be limited, so you may want to plan ahead in case a short walk is needed. We're looking forward to a joyful and community-centered evening together!

PSI Garden Updates
Stop by the PSI Garden Fundraiser tomorrow—Friday, May 9, from 2:15–4:00 PM. We’ll have a beautiful selection of flowers, vegetables, and herbs. All donations support the PSI Community Garden.
Thanks to a generous grant, we were able to launch the PSI Garden this year! As the garden grows, we’re continuing to explore ways to make the space as accessible and enriching as possible for all students. It’s a place for curiosity, community, exploration, and hands-on learning.
We invite you to check out our Amazon Wish List and consider donating an item to help students engage even more deeply with the garden. The list includes items like magnifying glasses, kid-sized tools, gloves, and sidewalk chalk.

Rally Night for Incoming 6th Graders and Families
When: Wednesday, May 14, 2025 - 6:30-8:00 pm
Where: SLP Middle School
This will be an opportunity for families to learn more about the middle school experience. The evening will begin in the Performing Arts Center with a welcome message and general information about the transition to middle school followed by the following opportunities:
- Connect and talk with 6th grade teachers, school counselors, and administrative team.
- Learn more around our before and after school opportunities, including Middle School Athletics.
- Attend an Informational session about our Extended Spanish Program and/or IB Middle Years Programme.
- Experience a 6th Grade Math Lesson with our CPM curriculum.
- Go on a tour of the middle school led by a current student.
- Purchase Park gear from the pop-up STORiole!

A Note from the School Nurse: Please Check Your Students for Lice
Because lice is common in childhood, it is important to check your children’s hair for head lice on a regular basis.
Head lice are tiny insects that make their home in human hair. Anyone can get lice and it is fairly common in school-age children. They are not a sign of poor hygiene and lice are not known to spread infectious disease.
Most commonly, head lice are spread by direct head-to-head contact with someone who has head lice. Lice crawl; they do not jump or fly. They may also be spread by sharing personal items such as combs, brushes, other hair-care items, towels, pillows, hats, and other head coverings. Dogs, cats, and other pets do not spread head lice.
In general, our school practice includes the following:
- When a child is identified with an active head lice infestation at school parents will be notified. Your child can remain at school and should be treated before returning to school.
- Your child’s health information will be kept private.
- Treatment should begin at home, as soon as possible once you are aware that your child has lice.
- Check everyone at home if one person in the home has head lice. Health Office staff can help by checking siblings at school upon request.
- Mass lice screenings at school are not performed.
- Please let the health office know if your child has lice.

Contact your child’s healthcare provider if home treatments are not effective. If you do not have a healthcare provider, contact the school health office for resources. Local pharmacies carry over-the-counter lice removal kits. Approximate prices range from $10-$35. To find professional organizations, search google for “Lice Removal Near Me.” These services can be quite expensive. Ask if they have a sliding scale fee based on income.

SunBucks: Summer EBT Program
There is a summer EBT program again this year. It has a new name called SunBucks. Qualifying families with students attending SLP will receive $120.00 per child for the summer for groceries. Please see the flyer for more details!

| | Last month, we introduced our first grade Colombian drum project. This project combined art, music, culture, and history, and wrapped up this morning with the drum performance! Our very own first grade teacher, Srta. Bernal, was able to share her Colombian heritage with the students. They then designed and created their own drums, and finally developed a "drum call" with Sr. Davis in music class. | | Click here to see more photos! | | |

The PPS&CF is a partnership of school, business, and community that enhances the excellence of our St. Louis Park public schools and youth programs throughout the community. 2025 Flint Hills Family Festival: May 30 & 31
Latin headliner, Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band, tickets on the Ordway stage were reduced to $8 for all tickets (down from $24-$34)! Keeping national and international acts accessible to families is our goal. Please see https://ordway.org/festival.
Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band is a multiple Grammy award winner and has also been awarded an Emmy. People Magazine lists this musical group #1 in "Coolest Kids' Music" and Billboard states they are ... "a musical artist you should know." Lucky Diaz will perform the opening show during the Festival on Friday, May 30 at 6:30pm. $8 tickets will also be available at the Ordway box office starting at 6:00pm.
There are other engaging performances at the Ordway on Saturday, May 31 and the outdoor stage and activities in Rice Park are all free. This Festival is a community treasure. We hope to see you there!
