January 16, 2025
Dear Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School Community:
We hope that you are having a great week! It's been a fun week of learning around our school!
We are excited to invite all students to participate in the Imagination and Inventors' Fair again this year! You will find more information about this below. It's always an exciting night to share and learn from others.
As a reminder, we do not have school next Monday, January 20 in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. We honor his legacy and the actions of all who work to create a more just and equitable society. In the spirit of Dr. King's teachings, we encourage families to take this opportunity to engage in community service or have discussions about the importance of advocacy for equity, racial consciousness and cultural competence, aligned with the other tenets of our St. Louis Park Public Schools Mission, Vision, and Core Values. Whether it's reading a book about Dr. King's life, participating in a local event, or reflecting on his powerful message of love and unity, there are many ways to honor his contributions. We look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Tuesday, ready to continue learning and growing together. Thank you for being members of our community!
In partnership,
Corey Maslowski, Principal
Megan Paulis de Rangel, Assistant Principal

In this section, we are featuring some of our amazing PSI Staff so the community can get to know every adult in the building as we work together to support each student at PSI!
This week we want to highlight two PSI staff members. Carolina Godoy and Odelaise Milián-Porto both teach second grade here at PSI. We are so happy to have them here!

Elders' Wisdom, Children's Song
Our fourth graders have begun working on the Elders’ Wisdom, Children’s Song (EWCS) project. EWCS is a program that incorporates community, history, education, and celebration through storytelling, song, and spoken word. Each fourth-grade class will adopt an elder from the community who will share his or her story. Each elder’s story will be recorded, analyzed, and interpreted by students. Then, inspired by the life story of the elder, each class will write a song that they perform to honor the elder.
If you have a fourth grader, they may seek your assistance to identify elders in your community who would be willing to share their stories and be honored at our PSI community celebration on Monday, April 28. Elders might be grandparents, neighbors, coaches, etc.
Contact Sra. Wieber with questions.

From the School Nurse
**The health office is looking for donations of sweatpants or joggers, sizes 6 to 10, preferably in gender neutral colors. Please bring donations to the office!**
A note on lice:
Because lice is common in childhood, it is important to check your children’s hair for head lice on a regular basis.
Head lice are tiny insects that make their home in human hair. Anyone can get lice and it is fairly common in school-age children. They are not a sign of poor hygiene and lice are not known to spread infectious disease.
Most commonly, head lice are spread by direct head-to-head contact with someone who has head lice. Lice crawl; they do not jump or fly. They may also be spread by sharing personal items such as combs, brushes, other hair-care items, towels, pillows, hats, and other head coverings. Dogs, cats, and other pets do not spread head lice.
In general, our school practice includes the following:
- When a child is identified with an active head lice infestation at school parents will be notified. Your child can remain at school and should be treated before returning to school.
- Your child’s health information will be kept private.
- Treatment should begin at home, as soon as possible once you are aware that your child has lice.
- Check everyone at home if one person in the home has head lice. Health Office staff can help by checking siblings at school upon request.
- Mass lice screenings at school are not performed.
- Please let the health office know if your child has lice.
Resources
Minnesota Department of Health Lice Information:
Contact your child’s healthcare provider if home treatments are not effective. If you do not have a healthcare provider, contact the school health office for resources. Local pharmacies carry over-the-counter lice removal kits. Approximate prices range from $10-$35. To find professional organizations, search google for “Lice Removal Near Me.” These services can be quite expensive. Ask if they have a sliding scale fee based on income.

Based on community feedback, we are adding a new section to La Prensa, Compartiendo Cultura (sharing culture). This section will highlight the many ways that we help students bring to life our SLP public schools’ vision statement, in becoming their best selves as globally minded contributors to society.
In this issue, we will highlight the guest musicians that came to Sr. Davis's music class last week, Siama's Congo Roots.
Siama Matuzungidi hails from DR Congo in Central Africa where the greatest export is music, influencing the birth of jazz and every genre since. Back in the day, Siama recorded hundreds of songs and toured the world with popular artists. Now based in Minneapolis, he's known for his intricate guitar, catchy songs (traditional Congolese-style, Congolese Rumba and Soukous), spirited singing and traditional African instruments. Siama's wife and musical partner, Dallas Johnson, is a vocalist and songwriter whose musical spirit came alive the first moment she sang Siama's music so she's passionate about sharing that experience. Click here to learn more!
We would also like to share some videos of their time here at PSI. Click here to watch!
