October is National Bully Prevention Month
Throughout the month of October, School Counselor, Anne Moore, will be teaching classroom counseling lessons about how to identify bullying behaviors and how to be an Upstander. An Upstander is someone who stands up for others and stops bullying when it happens. Upstanders are important to prevent and stop bullying from happening. More than half of bullying situations (57%) stop within 10 seconds when a peer intervenes on behalf of the person being bullied (StopBullying.gov).
Wednesday, October 19th, we will celebrate Upstander Day! Students are encouraged to wear orange to show that they will be an Upstander by spreading kindness, acceptance, and inclusion of others.
For more information on how to talk to your child about bullying, click here. More information about Upstander/Unity Day can be found here.

Music at PSI
During this school year, through the amazing MPR Class Notes Concerts program, we have multiple professional musicians visiting the PSI music classroom! In September, we had Heliopsis visit, a duo playing cello, mbira, and timbila. They were able to perform and interact with the kindergarten and 5th grade classes. You can see pictures and videos from that day on the PSI Music website: https://sites.google.com/slpschools.org/psimusic/home. It was a blast!
A Haitian group, Afoutayi, will be visiting mid-October.

PSI Parties Philosophy
A group of staff members met in the spring of 2016 to establish a beliefs statement regarding school parties in our building:
Acknowledging the needs of the whole child, we want students to celebrate relationships through meaningful and inclusive social experiences. We believe parties foster and build community, while creating opportunities for families to be involved.
We have three schoolwide party days annually:
- Fiesta de otoño (Wednesday, October 19)
- Fiesta de invierno (Wednesday, December 21)
- Fiesta de primavera (Thursday, March 30)
Classroom teachers will communicate what those parties will look like to celebrate our students and our community.

A Message from Health Services
Should my child stay home from school?
In general, the following information is intended to help decide when a student should stay home:
-
Fever of 100 degrees or more. The student is to stay home for 24 hours after the temperature returns to normal without the use of fever reducing medication.
-
Vomited or had diarrhea. The student is to stay home until 24 hours after the last episode.
-
Any uncontrolled cough.
-
Rash for which you do not know the cause. Check with your family physician/clinic before sending the student to school.
-
If feeling ill/unwell and will not be able to fully participate in school activities.
COVID testing is recommended for students with COVID illness symptoms. Tests are available at school. If your student tests positive, notify the school attendance line and a health services staff member will follow-up with the appropriate guidance.
When keeping your child home call the 24 hour school attendance line to report the illness at 952-928-6570.

Middle School Students Inspire "Idle-Free SLP" City Initiative
Seventh Graders Suwaydah Aden, Ibtisam Ahmed, and Erin Enright coined the term "Idle-Free SLP" during their Climate Action presentation last spring during science class. Their slogan and presentation have since served as inspiration for a new initiative in Saint Louis Park to reduce carbon emissions in our school parking lots.
As you pick up and drop off your kids this year, you may notice some new “Idle-Free SLP” signs. That’s because the City of St. Louis Park, in collaboration with Park Nicollet, is launching a student-driven idling reduction campaign for cleaner air and healthier lungs. Idling, or running the engine while parked, can produce more tailpipe emissions per minute than driving and has been linked to asthma symptoms, heart and lung disease, cognitive issues, and premature death. Children are even more vulnerable to air pollution than adults because they breathe more air per pound of body weight and their respiratory systems are not yet fully developed. This makes idling near schools – one of the most common idling scenarios as parents wait to pick up their children – especially dangerous.
Learn more and get involved by checking out the city website or by attending our poster-making session on Thursday, October 13 at St. Louis Park Middle School from 4-5 p.m. Snacks, beverages, and poster-making materials will be provided. Click here to register in advance.

Welcome Amity Intern, María Carazo!
A special thank you to Kevin & Sarah Russell for hosting María this semester! And thank you to the following cousin families: Cheryl Schweiss & Bill Bruss and Elizabeth & Stephen Kalpin. María is assisting 2nd grade classrooms this fall.
My name is María Carazo, I am 22 years old, and I am from Valladolid, Spain. I have recently finished a bachelor´s degree in primary education at the University of Valladolid. I have completed an internship during my bachelors. I have taught in the second, fourth and fifth grades of elementary education. During the school year I have given private lessons to children between 9 and 15 years old. My hobbies include listening to music, reading, watching series and movies and sports. I love all kinds of sports, especially soccer and basketball. I played basketball until I was 16 years old in the school league by categories in the city of Valladolid. In my family we are 4 people. My father, Alberto, my mother, Mercedes, my older brother, Raúl, and me. We live in the city of Valladolid. We like to spend our summers on the beaches of northern Spain and travel abroad. I am looking forward to learning a new culture and its different ways of teaching in a different country.

Host Families Needed!
Our children benefit each day from the assistance of eight Amity interns from Spanish speaking countries in our PSI classrooms. Each semester our school depends on families willing and able to host these dedicated interns. We are in need of PSI host families for spring semester (mid-January to mid-June). We currently have 4 of 8 families confirmed for Spring 2023.
Hosting is a unique and wonderful experience that can benefit your entire family, plus it’s a great way to give back to the students, teachers and staff of PSI and beyond. Please email psiamity@gmail.com if you are interested, have questions or would like to connect with one of our PSI Coordinators, Kyle Wermerskirchen, Megan Patterson, Paige Young or Susan Croom.
