Dear Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School Community:

I hope that you have had a great week! My heart was full on Monday evening watching our fourth grade students honor three elders for the Elders' Wisdom Children Song presentation at St. Louis Park Middle School. Thanks to Sra. Wieber and Sr. Davis for providing this enriching experience through Talent Development and Music classes. If you were not there, ask a fourth grader or their family about it! See here for some photos.

I look forward to seeing our community come together on Saturday from 12:00-2:30 for this year's PTO-sponsored Carnaval.  We are closely monitoring the weather forecast, but please note that the event will be held rain or shine, potentially moving some activities inside depending on the weather. Please be kind to our neighbors, respecting driveways and their yards. Thanks to Westwood Lutheran Church for allowing us to use their parking lot for overflow parking. We still need volunteers; please see below for more information.

Our second grade students had a great experience on Wednesday at Gibbs Farm! Thanks to everyone who helped make this possible!

Have a great week, and see you soon!

Sincerely,

Corey

NWEA Measures of Academic Progress (MAP)

Our students in grades 2-5 are taking the NWEA Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) this week in reading in Spanish. Next week, they will take the MAP test in math (in English). This is the first time that we are administering the reading assessment as a school in Spanish. Our current plan is to have students take the assessment in Spanish in the spring so that we can annually see students' current levels and growth in Spanish. This information will be helpful as we continue to be adaptive to all of our students' needs and to your child's individual needs. See here for more information.

Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month! Each week we will share an article or information around children’s mental health in order to fight stigma, educate our community, and advocate for those affected by mental illness.

This week we are sharing information about stress and anxiety for families. To learn more about how to cope with stress and overwhelming feelings, and the difference between stress and anxiety, see “I’m So Stressed Out” from the National Institute of Mental Health. For tips on helping your child reframe their worries, see teaching your child to turn their worry into wonder from Big Life Journal

Books for Adults about Anxiety:

5th Graders - Celebration of Learning

We are excited to share your child’s transition to Middle School with you! On Wednesday, June 7 starting at 12:45 pm, we will hold a “Celebration of Learning” in our gymnasium to honor our fifth graders as they transition from Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School to the Middle School years. Afterward, there will be light snacks/refreshments outdoors.

Due to space constraints with our gymnasium we need to limit the number of participants at the event to only adults living in the child’s household(s). We are exploring ways that we can share this experience with other relatives after the event, and we will email the slide show presentation and pictures of the event that can be shared.

Idle Free SLP

Idling your car, running the engine while parked, produces more tailpipe emissions per minute than driving. That is why the City of St. Louis Park is working to reduce idling in areas of concern, such as school drop-off and pick-up zones.

Many Thanks, PTO!

¡Muchas gracias! to our amazing PTO families for all your kind generosity every day, but especially during Staff Appreciation Week!

St. Louis Park Public Schools hosts first annual

powwow in honor of youth - May 20 at 1:00 pm

The American Indian Parent Advisory Council and the Youth Intertribal Council of St. Louis Park Public Schools will be hosting the first annual powwow. Leading up to the powwow, students and families have been spending time connecting with their culture. Volunteers are needed. Please contact krutina.flower@slpschools.org with any questions.

The American Indian Parent Advisory Council and the Youth Intertribal Council of St. Louis Park Public Schools will be hosting the first annual powwow. Leading up to the powwow, students and families have been spending time connecting with their culture.

During a four week art series, students have taken the time to handcraft regalia, an important expression of their lives, interests and family.

Ruby Malinski Shoemaker is a third grade student at Susan Lindgren Elementary School. It is her first time participating in a powwow, and she decided to make a skirt for this special occasion. Before starting, she spent time thinking about what type of fabric and colors she wanted to use - carefully selecting items that would be meaningful to her. She selected a beautiful black fabric with pink flowers, and planned to add black, white, red, yellow, and purple ribbons.

“It goes with the other things that I will wear like necklaces, my shirt, and ribbons,” she said.

Each ribbon, bead and decorative item holds great significance and gets added to represent an aspect of the person and what connects them with the world. Some of Ruby’s ribbons were selected to honor her family. The practice of sharing knowledge, tradition and history are all important to powwows. Her dad and her sister are also participating in this meaningful experience.

Ruby plans to wear her regalia at the powwow. Members of the community are invited to attend, and this is a great opportunity to learn more and engage in a sacred event that grounds people to the world. While this is an incredible opportunity and experience, it is important for people to be respectful of cultural traditions.

Please follow these guidelines when attending this event:

  • While at the powwow, there will be drums and people dancing in a circular motion. The circle is symbolic of the circle of life. Community members should not enter the circle unless invited.
  • A Master of Ceremonies will make announcements and lead the events. Follow the directions of this individual.
  • Do not photograph or video record anyone without permission. Regalia is not a costume, and should be respected.
  • There will be times when flags and honor songs will be present. These are often intended for specific groups, and it is important to be mindful and intentional in these instances.
  • Designated areas for dancers and drum circles should be avoided.

The powwow will be on May 20, and this year’s theme is “honoring the youth.” Grand entry will start at 1 p.m. There will be food, dancing, drumming and vendors.

The Amity Intern Program Needs YOU!

Are you looking for a way to be more involved, give back, and feel more plugged in at PSI? The Amity Coordinators are a group of 4 parent volunteers that help recruit and support Host Families and assist Interns to get established in MN and maximize their time in the United States. We work to ensure Amity Interns and Host Families fully enjoy their experience.

We are looking for 2 new coordinators for the coming school year. Being an Amity Coordinator is a great way to get to know PSI families, as you meet host and cousin families throughout the year. If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity, please email us at psiamity@gmail.com.

If you aren't ready to commit to being a coordinator but would like to contribute via one-off opportunities or learn more about how your skills, talents, or gifts could help our Amity Interns and host families, please also reach out. No time commitment, talent or gift is too small - we'd love to connect with you!
