Dear Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School Community:

It has been a great week of learning at PSI! Last Thursday, our fourth graders showcased their brilliance while honoring three community members at our Elders' Wisdom Children's Song: Sr. Ram Etwarroo, Sr. Dan Jensen, and Sra. Gayle Knutson. This annual project is a joint collaboration with Music and Talent Development classes.  

On Monday evening, under the direction of Sr. Tim Binger and Sra. Teighan Brummel-Culver, our fourth and fifth grade orchestra students and our fifth grade band students did an amazing job showing their learning at a concert at the St. Louis Park High School Auditorium. Thanks to our families for their support!

This morning, our first grade students had a great field trip to Westwood Nature Center. We are grateful for the collaboration with Westwood!

We are excited for our annual PSI PTO Carnaval at PSI on Saturday from 12:00-2:30 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine, and if we need to move indoors, we will communicate this to families by 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Please see below for more details, and plan accordingly for parking. Westwood Lutheran Church has given approval to use their parking lot for this community event, and we are grateful!

Garden Update

Thank you to everyone who came out to the plant sale last Friday! We had an incredible turnout, and it was such a joy to see students excited to choose plants to bring home. The donations will go towards sustaining the garden for next school year!

If you missed it but still want to support the garden, check out our wishlist here! We're building a space where students can explore, dig, observe, and create—from planting and watering to making chalk paint and building fairy gardens. The K–1 garden by the Kiss & Ride doors is already full of playful energy!

A Note from the School Nurse: Please Check Your Students for Lice

Because lice is common in childhood, it is important to check your children’s hair for head lice on a regular basis.  

Head lice are tiny insects that make their home in human hair. Anyone can get lice and it is fairly common in school-age children. They are not a sign of poor hygiene and lice are not known to spread infectious disease. 

Most commonly, head lice are spread by direct head-to-head contact with someone who has head lice. Lice crawl; they do not jump or fly. They may also be spread by sharing personal items such as combs, brushes, other hair-care items, towels, pillows, hats, and other head coverings. Dogs, cats, and other pets do not spread head lice. 

In general, our school practice includes the following:

• When a child is identified with an active head lice infestation at school parents will be notified. Your child can remain at school and should be treated before returning to school. 
• Your child’s health information will be kept private.
• Treatment should begin at home, as soon as possible once you are aware that your child has lice. 
• Check everyone at home if one person in the home has head lice. Health Office staff can help by checking siblings at school upon request.
• Mass lice screenings at school are not performed. 
• Please let the health office know if your child has lice.

Contact your child’s healthcare provider if home treatments are not effective. If you do not have a healthcare provider, contact the school health office for resources. Local pharmacies carry over-the-counter lice removal kits. Approximate prices range from $10-$35. To find professional organizations, search google for “Lice Removal Near Me.” These services can be quite expensive. Ask if they have a sliding scale fee based on income. 

SunBucks: Summer EBT Program

There is a summer EBT program again this year. It has a new name called SunBucks. Qualifying families with students attending SLP will receive $120.00 per child for the summer for groceries. Please see the flyer for more details!

Carnaval is THIS SATURDAY!!

The biggest party of the year is this Saturday from 12:00-2:30 pm! Come to PSI and enjoy games, inflatables, food trucks for purchase, crafts and a DJ. Bring the whole family!  

We still need volunteers to help run the games and inflatables. Please consider signing up for a short shift. You’ll still have time to enjoy all the fun with your family!

Spring Fundraising Drive

Check backpacks for the PSI PTO’s Spring Fundraiser Flyer. If you are able to contribute, every amount helps. We hope to welcome eight Amity Interns from Spanish-speaking countries from around the world to the PSI community for the 2025-26 school year. Amity interns deepen the language and culture immersion for our children every day by collaborating with our classroom teachers. The administrative fees and work stipends are ~ $6,500 per intern. The Amity Intern Program is fully funded by the PSI PTO.

2025 Flint Hills Family Festival: May 30 & 31

Latin headliner, Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band, tickets on the Ordway stage were reduced to $8 for all tickets (down from $24-$34)! Keeping national and international acts accessible to families is our goal. Please see https://ordway.org/festival.

Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band is a multiple Grammy award winner and has also been awarded an Emmy. People Magazine lists this musical group #1 in "Coolest Kids' Music" and Billboard states they are ... "a musical artist you should know." Lucky Diaz will perform the opening show during the Festival on Friday, May 30 at 6:30pm. $8 tickets will also be available at the Ordway box office starting at 6:00pm.

There are other engaging performances at the Ordway on Saturday, May 31 and the outdoor stage and activities in Rice Park are all free. This Festival is a community treasure. We hope to see you there!
