From the Principal

January 12, 2023

Dear Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School Community:

It's been a great week of learning at school! It was good to connect with many kindergarten families at the Kindergarten "Observation Night" in Talent Development on Tuesday. See here for a few pictures.

I am excited to see students showcase some of their brilliance at our PTO-sponsored Imagination and Inventors' Fair on Tuesday evening, Jan. 17. Your child can still sign up through tomorrow. Please see below for more information.

We are always looking for talented adults to work with our amazing children! Are you interested, or do you know anyone who would be interested in working at PSI or in St. Louis Park Public Schools? See here for the employment page to see current openings, as well as a link to work with our partner, Teachers on Call, if you are interested in being a teacher or paraprofessional substitute.

As a reminder, we do not have classes on Monday, January 16 in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. I am grateful for his legacy and for those who have worked (and are working) to create a better anti-racist society. See here for our District Strategic Plan as we work to see, inspire, and empower each learner.

Take care, thank you for sharing your children with us, and have a great week!

Fourth grade families - Elders Wisdom Children's Song Project:

We are excited to share that it is time to begin the Elders Wisdom Children's Song project with your students. Each class will adopt an elder from our community to tell his or her story. Each story is recorded, transcribed, analyzed and interpreted by the students. Inspired by the life story of the elder, each class will write and perform a song about their elder. The PSI community celebration of the elders will be held on Tuesday, May 2 at 6:30 p.m.

Fourth graders will be seeking assistance in helping to identify elders in our community who could come into the classrooms, share their stories, and be honored at our celebration. We would like the elder to be a member of our St. Louis Park community, possibly a family member, friend, neighbor, coach, etc. Please contact Sra. Wieber if you know of an elder who might be interested in participating in this project.

¡Gracias!

Sra. Wieber (wieber.kimberly@slpschools.org)

Lost & Found

Remember to LABEL ALL your child's items (jackets, boots, sweatshirts, sweaters, water bottles, etc.). Please come check the Lost & Found items (between the media center and gymnasium by door #2) to reclaim your belongings.

Attendance

PSI's 24-hour attendance line is 952-928-6570.

Click here to view St. Louis Park Public Schools' attendance policy.

Students are expected to be in school every day. Regular and punctual attendance is important for continuity in the school program and improvement of Spanish language and academic skills.

Parent/Guardians are responsible for notifying the 24-hour attendance line (952-928-6570) ANY time their child will be late or absent from school. Not calling in your child’s absence may result in an automated attendance call, and will result in an unexcused absence per the school procedures.

School start time for PSI is 7:45 a.m. and dismissal time is 2:15 p.m.

PSI PTO Imagination & Inventors' Fair

The 2023 PSI Imagination & Inventors' Fair is scheduled for next Tuesday, January 17, 2023 from 6:00-7:30 pm in the PSI gym. The goal of the Imagination & Inventors' Fair is to encourage all families to participate and nurture our children's love of science and imagination!

Keep in mind that projects do not have to be a science project either. Past projects have included catapults, test plants and sculptures, to name a few. Each child will have half a table to display their project. The gym will be open as early as 4:00 pm the day of the fair for participants to begin setting up. For those wishing to register their child, please use the link located HERE.

Registration closes tomorrow, Friday, January 13th. Table assignments and additional instructions will be emailed to participating families by Monday, January 16th.

Math Night is Back!

The PSI PTO is excited to host Math Night for families on Tuesday, February 9th from 6-7:30 pm in the gym. Stop by for a night of fun math games and activities such as Quick Chess, Mancala, Towers of Hanoi, Code Breaker, Chances Are, Money Bingo and more! This event is an opportunity to build student enthusiasm for math and offer caregivers a few ideas of how they can support math skills at home.

Math Night is sponsored by Mathnasium of St Louis Park. Volunteers may be needed to run activity stations and help with set-up and tear down of the event. If you are interested in volunteering, look for more information next week.
