Dear Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School Community:
It was wonderful to welcome our students back from spring break on Monday! Our first and third graders have given great feedback about their field trips yesterday.
Please join us tonight for our PTO-sponsored Pizza Dinner and Movie Night at the St. Louis Park Middle School! The movie will be Inside Out 2. See below for more details. Before the movie starts, we will welcome everyone in the Performing Arts Center, and invite parents to join us in the foyer for 20 minutes, while staff are supervising, for a "Coffee with Corey and Megan" in the foyer without the coffee (due to the hour). The purpose is to connect, answer questions, and learn together.
Our fifth grade students took the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA's) in science tomorrow, yesterday morning. Our students in grades 3-5 will take the (MCA's) for reading next Wednesday and Thursday starting at 8:00 a.m. The following week, our students in grades 3-5 will take the MCA in math on Wednesday and Thursday (April 23 and 24). These state assessments measure student achievement (and growth in math and reading--for fourth and fifth graders) related to the Minnesota State Standards. Again this year, all students take the tests at the same time on Chromebooks. These and many other formative and summative assessments help inform us of our students' academic growth.
At 1:45 today, we will participate in the Severe Weather Drill during MN Severe Weather Awareness Week. With all of our routines (and drills), we talk with students about the importance of knowing what is expected to be able to create a safe and caring learning environment so each student can learn.

This week we want to highlight a few PSI staff members. Sra. Holten and Sra. Brix are two of our newer staff here. Sra. Holten is a special education evaluator, and Sra. Brix is the administrative assistant to Sr. Maslowski. We are so happy to have them here!

Elders' Wisdom, Children's Song: April 28
The fourth graders are busy preparing for our Elders’ Wisdom, Children’s Song community celebration. This project incorporates community, history, education, and celebration through storytelling, song, and spoken word. Each fourth-grade class interviewed an elder from the community and has written a song inspired by the elder’s life story. Families are invited to join us as the fourth graders honor these elders in a community celebration on Monday, April 28, at 6:30 p.m. at the SLP Middle School. Contact Sra. Wieber with questions.

Our young gardeners have been hard at work this spring, growing a variety of seedlings indoors, and now it’s time to share them with you! Join us for our First Annual PSI PTO Community Garden Plant Sale on Friday, May 9, from 2:15-4:00 PM after school.
We’ll have a beautiful selection of plants, including annual and perennial flowers, vegetables, and herbs—perfect for your garden or patio!
This donation-based fundraiser in partnership with our PTO will help sustain the PSI Community Garden for years to come. Stop by to pick up some plants while supporting a greener future for our school!

Does your family eat cereal? If so, kindly send the empty, flattened, cereal boxes to school with your child. The cereal box cardboard will be used for our Cartonera book making project. Books will be published and shared May 30!

A Note from the School Nurse on Lice
Because lice is common in childhood, it is important to check your children’s hair for head lice on a regular basis.
Head lice are tiny insects that make their home in human hair. Anyone can get lice and it is fairly common in school-age children. They are not a sign of poor hygiene and lice are not known to spread infectious disease.
Most commonly, head lice are spread by direct head-to-head contact with someone who has head lice. Lice crawl; they do not jump or fly. They may also be spread by sharing personal items such as combs, brushes, other hair-care items, towels, pillows, hats, and other head coverings. Dogs, cats, and other pets do not spread head lice.
In general, our school practice includes the following:
- When a child is identified with an active head lice infestation at school parents will be notified. Your child can remain at school and should be treated before returning to school.
- Your child’s health information will be kept private.
- Treatment should begin at home, as soon as possible once you are aware that your child has lice.
- Check everyone at home if one person in the home has head lice. Health Office staff can help by checking siblings at school upon request.
- Mass lice screenings at school are not performed.
- Please let the health office know if your child has lice.

Contact your child’s healthcare provider if home treatments are not effective. If you do not have a healthcare provider, contact the school health office for resources. Local pharmacies carry over-the-counter lice removal kits. Approximate prices range from $10-$35. To find professional organizations, search google for “Lice Removal Near Me.” These services can be quite expensive. Ask if they have a sliding scale fee based on income.

This is the first step that individual classrooms are taking towards working with Sr. Davis in Music class to create a unique rhythm for each first grade classroom. | |
4th Annual Water Safety Festival
St. Louis Park Community Education is partnering with the University of Minnesota's Aquatics program to promote this wonderful opportunity! Join us April 27th 2025 at the Jean K Freeman Aquatic Center to learn more about water safety through a day of FREE swim clinics, lessons, performances, activities, and games!
All ages welcome, children ages 12 and under must be accompanied by a guardian.

School Board Listening Session on April 22 from 5:00-6:30 p.m.
Educational leaders from across Minnesota have shared feedback with the Minnesota Department of Education about the U.S. Department of Education letter. The letter details information on Title VI and SFFA v. Harvard. While next steps are still being determined by MDE and the Attorney General’s office, we’d like to provide an opportunity for the SLP community to share their voices on this matter. Please attend this listening session to share your thoughts! The listening session will be held in the school board meeting room (Room 21) at 6300 Walker Street on April 22 from 5-6:30 p.m.

Movie Night (2025): Tonight!
On Thursday, April 10, bring the whole family and come join us for a free pizza dinner and showing of Inside Out 2. We’ll be watching Inside Out 2 in Spanish with English subtitles. The pizza dinner will be in the middle school cafeteria from 5:30-6:00 pm, and the movie will start in the middle school auditorium at 6:15 pm.
