From the Principal

May 18, 2023

Dear Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School Community:

It has been a fun week! Our students and staff had fun with the dress up days last week prior to Carnaval! Our interns did a great job teaching dances in physical education, which were then showcased during our community celebration on Saturday. The weather at the beginning and end was great! Thanks to everyone for their flexibility and support as we shifted some of the activities indoors. I really enjoyed seeing the joy in the students' eyes and connecting with many of you.

It was also a fun week of activities. I truly loved watching our band and orchestra students perform at the High School last Thursday. GREAT WORK! On Tuesday, our first graders ventured to Westwood Hills Nature Center. Yesterday, our third graders went to Mill City Museum. It sounds like both field trips were a great success aligned with learning in our classrooms.

This morning, we welcomed some visitors of next year's kindergarten students who are currently in pre-school at Kids Place. It was wonderful to tour them around the building and to begin to get to know them.

Have a great week, keep reading, and thank you for sharing your children with us.

Sincerely,

Corey

Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month!  Each week we will share an article or information around children’s mental health in order to fight stigma, educate our community, and advocate for those affected by mental illness.

Gr. 5 Student Environment Leaders

Today the 5th grade Environment Leaders got the opportunity to beautify the Cedar Manor Park sign. They learned about native plants and the importance of pollinators from Judy Voigt, the SLP Garden Crew Supervisor and Urban Ecologist.

Students planted moss roses for the bees and red and yellow zinnia for the butterflies!! Click HERE for a few photos!

5th Graders - Celebration of Learning

We are excited to share your child’s transition to Middle School with you! On Wednesday, June 7 starting at 12:45 pm, we will hold a “Celebration of Learning” in our gymnasium to honor our fifth graders as they transition from Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School to the Middle School years. Afterward, there will be light snacks/refreshments outdoors.

Due to space constraints with our gymnasium we need to limit the number of participants at the event to only adults living in the child’s household(s). We are exploring ways that we can share this experience with other relatives after the event, and we will email the slide show presentation and pictures of the event that can be shared.

"El Carnaval de PSI" was a big hit thanks to the many volunteers who braved the rain and made it happen! A huge thank you to the leadership team who especially made this day possible: Melissa Barrett, Ali Timpone, Betsy Howe, Lisa Shepherd, Melissa Lang, Ashley Reina, and Vanessa Crosley. And a special thank you to PSI parents Jon and Samantha Schellhaas, the DJs for the day's events.

The Amity Program Needs YOU!

Are you looking for a way to be more involved, give back, and feel more plugged in at PSI? The Amity Coordinators are a group of 4 parent volunteers that help recruit and support Host Families and assist Interns to get established in MN and maximize their time in the United States. We work to ensure Amity Interns and Host Families fully enjoy their experience.

We are still looking for 1 more coordinator for the coming school year. Being an Amity Coordinator is a great way to get to know PSI families, as you meet host and cousin families throughout the year. If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity, please email us at psiamity@gmail.com.

If you aren't ready to commit to being a coordinator but would like to contribute via one-off opportunities or learn more about how your skills, talents, or gifts could help our Amity Interns and host families, please also reach out. No time commitment, talent or gift is too small - we'd love to connect with you!
